Ok so I now own a 749 and going through the process of finding out if I bought good or bad, knew the clutch was noisy by Ducati standards ,so today I had a go at stripping it down. Lots of dust and play in video . Removed plates , seems to be alloy friction and steel pressure plates ? Basket looks well worn If it need to replace the basket and plates who do we recommend, my budget is very low due to buying the bike so good make at good price are a priority
Well I have had my money's worth out of some clutch baskets in my 170,000 odd miles of Ducati riding, but I have not taken one to that level of wear! Depending on which part of Yorkshire you are in - John Cellier (Leeds area) or Nelly at Cornerspeed (near Mansfield) - will sell you the quality parts you need. If budget dictates that you have to resort to the bay of fleas - you may or may not get what you pay for, unless someone on here replies with experience of a reasonable supplier. Depending on your mechanical abilities and equipment, ask for advice on here if you need guidance. for a start, to get the centre Drum off you will need a holding tool, 3 hands and a big bar, or a rattle gun cos that nut is f-tight.
Chapeau Sev ! Peter, If you are at the Southern end of Yorks, I am at the northern end of Lincs and have a holding tool for the centre Drum if you need one.
Call thissen a Yorkshireman? It’s only 50% worn out… but you need to run the engine backwards and ride looking over your shoulder to access the other 50%
...and good news that your drum is ok and not seriously "ridged". This often gets overlooked as it's the basket that always makes the Internet surfer's headlines.
The ceramic friction material on most of the plates is breaking up and your steel plates have seen better days which is consistent with the excessive wear on the basket. Better be sitting down when you look at the cost of a full clutch pack. Andy
You could also check out, https://www.edovignaracing.com/en/b...replacement-set-plate-(sintered---steel).html. Edo Vigna actually designed the Ducati slipper clutch, I have used his plates and they have been excellent. Kicker unfortunately is finding a UK contact. Andy
Wow that’s my bubble burst! Time to search tinter net I presume the correct number of plates in each kit
A ‘kit’ should be just that, a complete set. The number of plates in a ceramic friction kit is higher than the number of plates in an organic friction kit because organic friction plates are thicker than ceramic friction plates. Not much performance difference in everyday performance between the two but ceramic are, IMO, better for ragging the bike Andy
