Thinking off buying a 1198s on a 10 plate,im looking some info before i poss buy, service cost and miles, also is there many problems with them,i love the look off it but my fear is the running cost will be so much more than a panagale cheers lads
Why don't you ask a dealer or a Ducati service centre rather than a bunch of internet no-marks
Most of the service cost is made up with labour costs. You will be looking at at least £70 ph at a dealer. A minor service is about an hour and a half, maybe two, all the way up to the Desmo service which is a full 8 hours. Then you have to look into parts etc. although it sounds expensive, but all accounts is no cheaper that the servicing on the other top spec superbikes. But as el t says, pop into a dealer. They tend to be very transparent with their services costs. My local dealer has them on a chart, clearly visible in the showroom
Because its Saturday night and the dealers don't open that time or Sunday,so the no marks as you say will know
Each service for me, apart from the first one at 600 miles has averaged out at £400. One had shim checks, the other belts. The less miles you do the cheaper it is though. If its a 10 plate though it'll be out of warranty. If you can, do the easier work yourself and take it to the dealer for the major stuff so you get the stamp.
You could try gettin gyour bike serviced in the winter ie after september as my local dealer reduces the hourly rates from around £70 to around £45 so a good saving, they arent as busy so more saturdays to work around. Downside is that you may need / want to trailer or van your bike due to weather conditions.
If its dry at the time, two short trips in the salt wont do any real damage to the bike, just give it a really good wash down afterwards. Saves faffing about with a van (unless you have one already of course)
Id ring up a few dealers and ask. When I bought my 996 I called up my local Ducati dealer and asked them how much for a belt & major service. They wanted £900. I then rang up 2 specialists and they wanted £350 and £450 respectively. I ended up buying all the bits myself and doing it for a lot less. In fact with the money I saved I was able to replace much more than just the bits in a service - i did brake pads, brake fluid, chain/sprockets, fuel filter, belts, oil + oil filter and I think that lot came to about £550. A lot of the service cost is stripping the bike down to get to the engine. I just didnt see the point in forking out £70 or £80 an hour for some ducati technician to just undo a few fairing screws and allen bolts when i can do it myself.
