So I've finally done it. Last Saturday I bought a 2002 748 from Basingstoke & rode the 100 miles back to get in nose to tail traffic round the M25 and torrential rain. Not the way I'd dreamed my start to Ducati ownership! Anyway, now I've got her home & cleaned her up there's a couple of things which I think are pretty common but I'd like to sort over the winter months. I've searched the forum but can't find related threads (though I'm sure they're there somewhere!). I'd be grateful of some guidance/solutions/suggestions in the following areas: 1) Misted headlights. 2) doing something so I the engine continues running when you put down the side stand. 3) Easiest way to go from Bip to Mono (the bike came with a boxed original Duke mono unit). 4) No feeling/braking from the rear brake pedal. Thanks in advance for your help. COH555
i fitted a different sidestand bracket from neil at cornerspeed to stop mine flicking up but it is older than yours and doesnt cut when the sidestand is down, i have read of a conversion on this forum tho. my rear brake was also crap, and the rear hose in a bad state. flushed/drained out all the fluid, cleaned up the caliper off the bike and made sure the pistons were moving well, fitted new rear pads and hose/fluid. net result is its still fairly crap, as rear brakes go, but at least works to some extent, i think to be honest they probably arent that hot from new.
the misting issue is very common and even affects bikes that have literally never been ridden. the method for clearing the headlight is usually a case of removing the bulb and poking a rag covered stick into the hole, alternatively you can blow a hairdryer in there. going from bip to mono is easy, although a genuine mono will have an ally subframe (which will not bear the load of pillion). the seats simply unclip near the tank, with the electrical connectors on the inside of the seat.
All very common issues that many owners have. The headlamp has already been mentioned and just needs cleaning from the inside. Some have suggested swilling methylated spirit around the inside of the headlamp and then drying it off. I use a rag on a stick with some alcohol myself. The sidestand needs a bypass switch, eBay is a good place for them but you really need one that cuts out if you put the bike in gear when the stand is down. Your sidestand won't flick up automatically as it is a newer model and will have been modified from new. You will need all the appropriate parts for a mono seat including the modified rear seat support plate. Your main problem will be that the wiring harness will be too short to fit the mono subframe and mount the ECU, you either need to get hold of a mono rear loom or modify the mono subframe, not an easy job. Easiest way is to keep the biposto unit and fit the mono seat on that but you will need spacers made up to get the seat to fit properly. It also depends on whether you have a genuine plastic mono seat or a fibreglass or carbon fibre unit. The rear brake is poor from new and is only really there to satisfy MOT regulations etc, Unless you change master\slave cylinders it's hard to improve it, I use a wave disc on mine but it's not much of an improvement. If you need in depth details on fitting a mono seat you can always PM me, I have fitted and modified a number of these seats for road and track use and have worked with all the variations.
Thanks to all who have contributed so far. can't wait to see my wife's face when I march off up the shed with her hair dryer! RED998, I'll be in touch re the seat unit & what I need to swap it over. It is a genuine Ducati item. What should I search for to by-pass the stand auto cut off? Cheers COH555
Genuine Ducati seat is the easiest to fit as all the seat fittings are moulded in, sometimes you have to mould them in yourself and you then need a lathe to make up these spacers. Ducati sell the other spacers to raise the mono seat to the right height, they are long though and you will need to cut them down. Ducati actually used to do a conversion kit with all the parts but it was very expensive, they turn up on ebay sometimes though, I have seen several. PM if you need to and i will run you through it.

I bought this last year to solve the sidestand annoyance. Neat, easy to fit and does the job. https://tpoparts.com/cat093/index.php?route=product/product&path=1_48&product_id=97
Cheers Carey Just ordered the side stand by-pass from your link TPO Parts. £32 including delivery. Even managed to bootleg the DSB discount code which saved $3.50. Every little helps! COH
my 2002 748 had a switch fitted to stop it stalling with the stand down but the stand didn't spring up like the early bikes, I assume yours also stays down and isn't the flick type? I never managed to get my rear brake to work 'well' and even on the 848 Evo I demo rode, they really are poor. My suggestion would be a high rated fluid (as the master cylinder is basically bolted to the engine!) and make sure it's really well bled with a decent set of brake pads, that's really all you can do. Mine already had the Mono Seat fitted, although I could have swarn it was still on a Biposto subframe, I am sure others will know more than me on this.
All mono subframes are aluminium and all biposto subframes are steel in order to take the weight of two people. If you cannot see what material it is then on a alloy subframe the ECU is right at the back of the subframe and the ECU plug is at the front and the biposto is "sideways" with the ECU plug on the side. A 2002 is likely to be an E model and therefore started life as a biposto.
The easy spot for a Biposto subframe is the rear footpeg mounting bolts visible near the mounting bolts under the riders seat...
As above, you`ll see the bip rear footpeg mounts still on it if its a bip subframe, although theres people on ebay simply chopping these off, repainting it and selling them as a mono subframe. I fitted a monoposto single seat to my bip after I bought it, and it was an easy job of swapping the seat cushion over, making some 1inch spacers and using longer bolts to attach the rear lock mechanism. I used a high quality plastic seat and it looks awesome. The rear brakes are extremely rubbish, but then if you look at the size of the brake pads - literally 1inch square, its a wonder they stop anything at all. I replaced the pads with ebc HH pads and that seemed to help a bit. The misted headlamps are normal, mines got the same. It was actually an advisory on the MOT. Theres a guide online as to how to clean them out. Enjoy the new bike!
Thanks all and a public thanks to Red998 aka Tony for taking the time to send a personal e-mail guide with shopping list & photos re swapping from Bip to Mono. These few jobs should keep me quiet for a few weeks! COH555
