Hi All After some words of wisdom please changed the belts myself and started her up ad she ran fine no issues ticked over lovely. Starter solenoid played up and stuck so replaced with a second hand one problem solved but she will not tick over unless a bit of choke is given then she will tick over. At junctions and roundabouts if I have to stop she will stall so have to keep feathering the throttle lightly no issue then. TPS has been reset today and error codes cleared but still wont tick over and have been told the timing on the belts is out. Is this the case? Since changing the belts ive done over 800miles and no issues apart from ticking over, even done some decent motorway miles and some good speed and no issues. Any thoughts? Cheers hyabusa47:frown:
is power still the same. same grunt and top end if its so far out you will have valve to piston contact and serious damage but youd know by know lol as said I would certainly check to make sure everything is connected ok. you could be a tooth out. the easiest way is to start again pull the spark plugs out. make sure the cylinders are at tdc on their compression stroke (v important) and re align the pulleys so they are inline upside down capital tees if you are with me. there is a video on you tube on how to do it by some american guy in a workshop. the video is incorrect and he has the vertical cylinder on the exhaust stroke so be careful if you use him as a reference as the cams are in the wrong position to know you are on the compression stroke you can do one spark plug at a time and then check for perfect top dead centre of the piston with a long screwdriver through the spark plug hole... of course there are other ways to do it using the bottom pulley datum-dot hope that makes sense. any questions ask ps verify belt tension. I used the Hz method with a smartphone app - spot on
Hi Phil, yes power is the same and yes I did use the American guy on utube which is were I might have gone wrong. I lined up the bottom pulley dot with the old belts on and the horizontal cams were upside down T's as you said, I marked the belts with a pen on both cylinders and transferred onto the new belts. I did not check the TDC on the horizontal as the pulley dot was inline with the mark on the case. but did check the TDC on the vertical one after rotating the engine backwards. Guess I might have to redo all over again...
if you look at the video again you will note he has the 'T' s upside down compared to the horizontal cylinder. he is describing incorrectly compared to the position of the engine. the whole point of TDC is so the both valves are perfectly closed when TDC on compression stroke is achieved and valves under no cam loading . the position he has it in is much harder and less accurate. especially if you arent using specialist cam locking tools to stop the tendancy to move at a position other than TDC/ valves closed and the bugger has disabled comments. if you trawl the comments there are loads of people in the know who have pointed out his error.
finally when setting belt tension this is best done before putting the spark plugs back in, and again at TDC oyherwise you will get a false tension reading with the belt being under cam tension it cam make it 30hz to tight im my experimenting. thats about 30% theres obviously different ways of doing it but its works for me with no specialist tools with the caveat being you are somewhere near in the 1st place
Just checked the video again on utube and can definitely see the horizontal cams T's facing upside down. But when he does the vertical and rotates 90 degrees backwards they T's are facing the right way up which is what did. This must be problem as the bike starts and runs ok but won't tick over... Thanks for the advice as well very much appreciated.
Hyabusa47 I am sure that my timing is correct after changing my belts, but I still suffer the same symptoms as you. I recon there is nothing wrong with your valve timing, if you were one tooth out I'm sure you would have noticed it and the bike would not run as you say yours has for 800 miles. I would say that the valve timing is not your problem! I would say get a compression test done ( very easy and cheap to do, free if you d.i y), this will show up any issues with possible valves not opening/closing properly which could be the cause of you not getting good tickover. My 749s valve clearances were out of spec' at 18k and needed reshimming, what mileage has you engine done?
Engine has just done over 18k on the clock. I remember you helping me a lot when I changed the belts so I know I did it right, maybe got the vertical cylinder done wrong but everything else was ok.
Thanks Simon as I said its not the idle stall that was bugging me,it's what the mechanic said before he even plugged in the tps, (that's not sounding like it is running on both cylinders)eg chec the valves, throttle body's ,and cam timing,my mates going to have a look at it later...
Well had this crap now for 4 weeks rode it twice due to bad stalling reset tps still stalling and back firing like a gatling gun and just found out that when the belts had been done the bottom end values had been moved hense the stalling so got a price £700+ well happy NOT
Don't rotate the engine backwards, keep turning it over forwards to give better accuracy when setting the belts.
