Know you are more than capable but be VERY CAREFUL to get the polarity correct with the OBD plug with the battery connections. If you get it wrong you can screw the ECU, well there is a possible get around but you really do not wanna go there Just a friendly word of advice. Oh and it will be interesting to know how you get on John
Oh no, now I read this!! Think I might have f&*cked my ECU (unless there is a workaround?). Went to try out Ducati Diag for the first time, on my 2005 ST3. Set up everything on the laptop OK, seemed to be working fine. Cable recognised OK. Took it out to the bike, plugged (so I thought) correct crocodile clips (by colour) to correct pins on the Optimate lead. Connected up to the PC, but no connection yet. Except, obviously they weren't! Cue a spark, me frnatically pulling the clip off. Thought Id had a lucky escape, as hadn't connected to ECU etc via laptop. But, now when I turn ignition on, check engine light is on, fan runs constantly, and bike won't run (starts but conks out). Have I done something irrevocable and expensive? James
There is a work around for this problem. The 3 way diagnostic connector on the bike only has 2 wires into it. You need to tap into what would be the middle wire with a length of wire and run this to the -ve terminal on the battery. That should cure your problems. I cannot stress enough the importance of continuity testing the Fiat Adaptor before connecting to the bike. There have been instances where the wrong coloured covers have been put on the crocodile connectors thus inverting the + and -. The +ve goes to Pin 16 and the -ve to either Pin 4 or 5 on the female OBD connector. Once everything has been found to be OK then only ever connect the +ve fly lead to the battery. The -ve fly lead shoud be attached to a good earth on the frame or engine.
Thanks, Chris - It worked!! I didn't connect it to the battery -ve, but to an unused bolt hole on the rear chassis (under the seat on the right hand side), meaning I only had to run a short length of cable. It seems to work OK, although I will probably look at a DP ECU (or clone) in the near future anyway. Apart from the fried earth, am I likely to have done anything else to the ECU? Cheers, James
