1260 Exhaust Manifold - Broken Nuts

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by c3nturi0n, Feb 17, 2025.

  1. Hi everyone,

while attempting to loosen of and clean my front exhaust manifold, i managed to break / shear 2/3 nuts. Third is still in place and likely to snap too :(.
I will try and pry them out with the screw extraction tool and cordless (hopefully that will do the job).
Once out, i wonder what solution one should use to secure it back in?

    thanks much

  2. There is a lot of useful information about exhaust manifold studs in this forum, sadly, they are a constant issue. If you are fortunate, sometimes you are, sometimes you are not, there will be enough thread to screw on 2 thin nuts which you back up tight to each other and just unscrew. In a similar situation, I had enough thread for one ordinary nut which I tack welded to the stud remnant. If all else fails, flat the broken edge, pop mark and drill the stud out. Genuine PITA but not the end of the world. Andy

  3. Cheers Andy.

Once all out, would you recommend using the same solution (studs+screw on bolts) or should I use an 'all-in-one' bolt solution to tie it back together?

ps. do you happen to know the length of the stud?

  4. Studs and copper nuts for me. I have just remembered, on one occasion because I had the head off, I did steel thread inserts which is another option in situ on the horizontal cylinder. I don’t remember the threaded stud size, just bought a minimum order bag from my dealer. Andy

  5. Had this issue on my mates 1200. Did almost exactly what Andy did but welded an 8mm low profile nut to the remnants of the stud but as quickly as I could get the header off whilst maintaining some heat in the engine head.
That and heat from welding plus copious spraying with a penetrant spray and they (2) came out.
I replaced with stainless inserts (his choice) and titanium nuts.
