Oil Stains On Brick And Concrete

  1. Over the weekend, my eldest dog decided I wasn't giving him enough attention and decided to drop his ball into my used oil pan... Twice. After the first time he must have decided it wasn't obvious enough so took the ball out, walked around and then put it back in.

I didn't discover this criminal activity until later in the day where I noticed (and was immediately concerned I had caused an oil leak) drops of oil all all over my garage floor and outside on the brick paving... I've tried degreaser (simple green) and brake cleaner, neither made a mark on the stains.

Who has an old wives tale trick to remove oil stains? Dog is fine, but continues to be stupid.

  2. Try Bilt Hamber Surfex HD. You may need two or three applications. If you want to go down the DIY route you can use some cat litter over the stain to absorb the oil overnight, then remove it. Other options are baking soda or washing powder. If the stains are relatively fresh, these wil remove the worst of it. Don't be tempted to scrub the stains as you want the product to leech the oil out of the masonry. You may need to use a detergent afterwards and a pressure washer to remove any final traces.

  3. Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! I'll try cat litter on the bricks outside and see how I get on. I fear I left the stains too long (over 24h until I tackled cleanup). The pressure washer was going to be my last resort, thanks again for the tips!

  4. Cement dust will help soak up.

As per Topolino I’d also use a lot of dish liquid and / or laundry soap/powder.

  5. I do have a pile of insta set post concrete bags right next to some of the offending drops... If the catlitter trick doesn't do it, I'll give that a shot. Followed by a session on my hands and knees with some fairy liquid :D

  6. Blast it with brake cleaner then kitchen towel over the top to draw it out is how I always do it.

  7. Similar quandry with my drive.. gave up trying to get the paving blocks (tegular) clean and just flipped them over. Not being glib... didn't think of it right away so spent hours scrubbing! :joy::sob:
