Mortar Mix For Topping Off A Wall?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Andy Bee, Apr 14, 2025.

  1. The dividing wall in the garden is starting to loose it's mortar topping but I'm not quite sure the sort of mix I'd need. It's one of those, as is the style in these 'ere parts, that is just a curved layer of mortar ('muck') with no coping stones.

I'm thinking I'll need summat a little more durable/flexible than a standard 3:1 cement based bricklaying mortar mix, but only got as far as perhaps adding lime and some aggregates. No clue as to ratios though.

    Any ideas?

  2. Cement mix I’ve always used is 3:2:1
made up of 3 1/4” spar, 2 sand 1 cement
The smaller spar is handy when troweling for a smooth finish particularly when finishing off a decorative job
