Red “engine” Light 1199

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wes, May 25, 2025.

  1. No issues during my previous ride and all I’ve done since then is wash it and adjust the chain. Thought I’d have a quick spin today but was greeted with the red “engine” warning icon. Not flashing, just constant with the engine management illuminated in yellow.
I did attempt to start it and it did so without issue. No unpleasant noises and took a small rev without issue. Pushed her back into the garage and now looking for assistance.
Best to give a few details but I already imagine it’s a trip to a dealer. It is a 2014 with less than 5k on the clock. Two things stand out from it being perfect. It went through a stage of the gear indicator not being happy reading neutral, it would skip between N and 1. Not a biggy and seemed to have resolved itself over the last few months. However the second one might be my issue. I did notice she was getting a bit “whiffy” fuel wise. This was only really noticeable at initial start up but sometimes I thought the fumes were strong in slower traffic.
Back to now.... I can’t seem to find a way to read any codes through my screen and I don’t have a diagnostic reader. Can I get any codes without a reader ? Next, seeing as it’s probably going to end up somewhere to be repaired does anyone know of any reputable dealer or tech in the South Wales Swansea area who could sort the issue out for me.
    Cheers for any help.

  2. after washing and the errors have picked up i would look at the BBs unit plug under the seat, and also the hand control switches.
its happened a few times to my 1199 and i now avoid water under the seat area if at all possible

  3. Thank you for the response.
I’ll investigate under my seat this evening. Can you confirm what you mean by BBs please. I did also notice that my kill switch toggle was damp when rotated. There is some moisture in there so who knows where else. Last time out both the bike and myself got splattered with flies hence the amount of water used.
Once again thank you for replying.

  4. Hi Wes, if you have some compressed air available give the switches and remove the seat and the BBs unit is visible mounted in the subframe. The plug is accessible once the tank clamp at the rear is removed

  5. Nice one Nathanhu.......I’ll give it a go. Sleepless nights until this gets resolved one way or another. If the bikes not right..... neither am I !
    Cheers Wes

  6. Just an update. After I switch my ignition on I get the usual prime sound but then when it should stop it seems to change note and just continues with a low frequency hum or whine. It doesn’t stop. This note can be changed by inputs on the throttle.
Throttle position sensor ? Throttle grip sensor ? Throttle motor or relay or pressure sensor ?.....something not even on my radar. I think she needs plugging into diagnostic tool as this could be a rabbit hole !
    Cheers Wes

  7. has the fuel connection between the tank and injector assembly a leak? this would also explain the small of fuel previously

  8. Just an update.
Cardiff Ducati diagnostic highlighted a faulty map sensor. They didn’t have one in stock but it’s nothing serious. I’ve left the bike with them and should be back with me (fresh mot as well) soon. That big red “ENGINE” wasn’t a pleasant sight though.

  9. Really worth getting a diagnostic tool like odbstar. It will pay for itself in one dealer trip.

Lots of issues are plug and play sensor or simple part swaps that are more than in the realm of DIY and there are a multitude of helpful guides on forums like this.

And a good sense of achievement sorting your baby out yourself.

Oh and I am with you, if my bike isn't right I am a nightmare but I am an Auti spaz lol

    Glad you got it sorted
