Another Tent Thread

  1. Thanks all for the comments.

I've been looking at this on and off over the last week and have come to the conclusion that I'm better off spending my cash on a better tent in terms of quality and low weight to look after myself rather than the bike, which lets face it should be capable of being left out overnight even in the rain with no adverse effects.
The tents with a garage are not only significantly heavier and more bulky, but are also expensive compared to better spec normal tents.

There is always the possibility of carrying a lightweight cover for the bike that could also serve other duties if required.

  3. It might be a few weeks away.
I'll have no need for one until probably mid-June so will do my usual thing of keeping an eye on what's available at what price then pouncing when I see one worth having.

  4. I would like one of these - the Terra Nova Starlite 2

Although, personally, 3 things I reckon to be against it
    • Cost £445 for a tent to be used on spring / summer campsites only. Not going to be climbing Ben Nevis with it.
    • Probably not great for hot weather, Europe in the summer can get very hot
    • A bit - crawling around living on the floor on your hands and knees

But otherwise a very capable, well made, lightweight and portable tent.

  5. Thought I'd update this thread.

    I purchased one of these:
    https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15980944/oex-jackal-ii-person-tent-15980944

It has mainly great reviews and is currently available at big discounts in a few places.
The 5000mm Hydrostatic Head, under 3Kg weight, and packed length of 440mm swung it for me considering what I'll be using it for.
I don't think I need anything more special.

  6. Im currently in Jönköping,Sweden,on a random adventure too Finland.....
My tent of choice for this trip is the Helm compact one,due to its pack size and weight....
But even if the tent doesn't take up much space,it's all the other essential items that make the experience that do....
Ie... sleeping bag, sleeping pad, jetboil, food/water,chair etc
That said,im currently waiting for the Durston x dome 1+ to come back in stock, and will order just for the carbon poles !!

  7. Looks good. Its 1.5kgs lighter than mine, but you will have to let me know if you can put it up in under a minute!

  8. Looking good there @BaseJumper.
Yes, I've had to reconsider all the kit I'd usually use and pare it down.
We usually use the small canisters for our Jetboil anyway, and have several spare around us, my thoughts are that a couple of small canisters are able to be packed in spaces one large one might not fit.
Love our Jetboil, we have it in the back of the Landie a lot for making a brew after a walk etc, and often even have it in our pack when out for a walk with a 1.5L Water container.
I'll obviously have to rely on the 1.5L Water carrier on the bike rather than the 10L in the back of the Landie.

My sleeping bag is already quite a good quality one that packs up small, but when I ordered the Tent I also ordered a new sleeping mat as my current one is far too big:

  9. I think the quoted time is 10mins, I've not tried yet but can't see it taking that long.
The good thing is the flysheet goes up first so you can unpack the inner and put it up in the dry if it's raining.

  10. Mine goes up kinda like an umbrella. All the inner etc is always inside the roll, ready to go up instantly. Damned clever these Chinese fellows. Takes an extra minute to add the porch if I'm using it in addition!

This guy is a little slow...

This is a 3 person, mines just a 2 person
