900ss Engine Running Unevenly - Coils?

  1. They look good to me.

  2. So maybe there is still some residual "stuff" in the pipe(s) from before.
Question is why does it appear to be, and smell like, oil.

I will run it again later for a little longer and see if it stops.

  3. Oil is blue smoke... white is often nothing more than water vapour/condensation especially if it has been sitting for some time.

Or, as Nasher mentioned, it could just be unburnt fuel loitering in the pipes from when it proved difficult to start along with Borgo's suggestion of setting & synchronising

Have you taken it out for an Italian tune? so it gets truly warmed up to running temperature.

  4. I see you are running NGK R plugs these have been commented about before I have had problems with these even brand new ones the R standing for resistor as to stop electrical interference with components
but have found that although they have a lovely spark the engine does not run well on some engines found it will not even start with brand new plug
had issues with my I.E ss intermittent rough running dropping onto one cylinder etc went through the whole bike looking for issues found a few learnt a lot but still had running problems
long and short changed spark plugs for Bosch plugs and it ran lovely
so even though new plugs look good doesn't mean they are very frustrating

  5. The 'Ducati' branded ones are Champion from memory and some say they run better than NGK. Personally Ive tried all sorts including iridium, although not Bosch to be fair, and the ones in there at the moment are the best Ive tried....BRISK. Pricey but excellent, iridium ones dont really work in these bikes imo its worth noting.

  6. brisk heard of them said to be good not used them as you say pricey
just been looking for my old thread on my 750 ss ie build to see if plug info for Bosch plugs was there
but cannot find the thread been a while (ahem years )

  7. I ran NGK for years, however as Ive modded my bike so much the higher performance required has called for a better plug, so I can justify the cost. Id try the Bosch, or even get some Champion as they are cheap as chips if you need new plugs. You can put the NGK part number into Google to get the cross reference for other manufacturers

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  8. Never heard of Brisk plugs before,

  9. They give a very fat spark find them noticeably better than NGK I had in previous

  10. Part of the NGK problem is that they are so widely faked, there’s very little chance of knowing whether you’re buying genuine plugs or not. Bosch and Champion seem to be less pirated

  11. Hi all

Sorry for the delayed update on this one

So the bike is now starting and running fine - evenly at least - but I am getting lots of smoke from the exhausts, and in particular, after it has warmed up a bit (5 to 10 mins), blip the throttle and oil is still being spattered out from the manifold/silencer join on the LHS.

My intention was to MOT and sell the bike, but I've had to cancel the MOT which was booked in for today, in light of the above.

    Totally fed up!

  12. I can't see that being oil tbh, are you 100% sure it's not just condensation mixed with soot? Why not remove the manifolds and clean the insides out?

  13. It needs a 20 mile ride enroute to its MOT

  14. Ran again for 5-10 mins and it didn't seem to be as bad. Un-cancelled the MOT, took it along and it passed. Felt really good to be out on it again. Still going to sell though.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond on my woes!
