The cable tie method works very well . A boot heel, soap and cable ties to keep the tyre compressed make it easy.
Tyre levers are cheap, need a bead breaker obviously, I don't bother balancing anymore, but have a static balancer: All my bikes: 996, 999, 1098, 1199, muttly, monsters , mates R1,R6 etc etc
Ratched strap round the circumference of the tyre to get the bead back in if it's difficult on the inflation
Would be trying that if I didn't have my kit. Not sure about using silicone lube on the bead, stays slippy... As he said: "This doesn't always work". Kit is pricey I'll admit, even though a tyre lever is included it doesn't contact the rim, just used to easily get the bead over the nylon 'shoe'.
