So I've been wanting one for years, so I've finally decided to buy a Scrambler. I'm trawling through the adverts and a fair few have changed the rear shock for aftermarket ones like Maxton for example. Is there a know fault, or are the OEM one just shocking? - sorry couldn't help myself. Thanks.
I had a Scramber Classic and found the rear shock just fine. But lots of people did change to Maxtons for the snob value.
I think it depends on your weight - Terry (El Toro) is a relatively small chap - so relatively modest weight I am a short but sturdy (fat) fellow - so I found the standard shock (MK 1 Icon - 2015) - to be not correct for me - so swapped the rear to Ohlins and fitted Andreani Fork Cartridges also to the front - MUCH improved ride. I later swapped for 2018 1100 Scrambler - and did not need to do anything - except adjust Preload. I later swapped to 2024 1100 Scrambler with Ohlins and did not need to do anything - except adjust preload... did not see a massive difference between the 18 and 2024 model with Ohlins. What year and model bike? They are all great bikes.... 800 needs to be worked harder - but perhaps more fun. 1100 more torque - so an easier ride.
IME, we have 2 Icons in the family, the Kayaba suspension is built to a (low) budget and is, IMO, bottom drawer stuff. No adjustment on the front and a basic pre load on the rear. Fitting a better quality rear shock (Öhlins DU505) on our 2016 model, improved the ride quality and was well worth the expense. I’m currently researching an upgrade for the 2024 model but as previously mentioned, rider weight has a big influence on the suspension performance. The (803cc) Scrambler is great fun so long as you don’t get too enthusiastic Andy
