I'm looking at getting a Quadlock bar mount so I can use my iPhone as a SatNag. I've heard stories that the vibrations from the bike have broken cameras.......anyone experienced this at all? Anyone got Positive or Negative reviews??? Thanks.
Used one with a vibration dampener on my Panigale V4 last summer on a trip to Germany. Worked well enough and my phone hasn’t stopped working
I’ve got a Rokform mount that is similar to quad lock. I’ve been using it for a year for sat nav with no issues to iPhone. My only gripe is the iPhone will not let me lock my maps app horizontally, so it is a bit of a pain using the twist lock switching portrait/landscape modes.
You need the vibration dampener, use them on my 2 regular bikes. I have the charging version of the quad lock works great.
Quadlock is good, as is SP Connect. Selling some SP Connect kit at the moment. Moved for reasons of compatibility with my Android Auto/CarPlay panel and its mounting system that is based on Quadlock. The vibration dampener is a worthwhile investment as protection against wrecking your phone's camera/s. Might be OK without it but is it really worth the risk?
[QUOTE="Atomic Monkey, post: 2254614, member: 45546"...My only gripe is the iPhone will not let me lock my maps app horizontally...[/QUOTE] Oh, that's interesting, didn't think of that.....I'll have to test it when my wife is driving next - if I can manage to open my eyes
Just had a look at the Rokform - looks good. I noticed they as do Quadlock do a range of Golf mounts - how does that work! [Rhetorical].......I would click on it but worried Google will add 'Golf' to my digital personality.
I use the UltimateAddons version which works fine. To solve the issue of phone damage I use an old phone and hotspot from my phone that's in my pocket, it also means if it flys off it's not really an issue
I have the quadlock kit fitted (wireless charger head, wiring adapter and vibration mount) with an Evotech mounts on them both.. I think they are brilliant and have them in my other bike I use for work. My wife has one to go in her Duke as well just need to get the Evotech mount.
Quadlok are brilliant but make sure you get the correct one for your phone and, depending which phone you have, do get the vibration damper. If your phone is fairly prehistoric don’t worry about it but if you’ve something like a modern iPhone, especially the Pro versions, it’s the motors for the zoom lens and focusing that can get shaken to bits and stop working, or at least make all your photos fuzzy. It’s not an issue if you have the vibration damper.
Using a your iPhone as a WiFi hot-spot makes it overheat? I've previously done this with Android phones, sacrificial phone on mount, decent phone powered in tank bag with no issues. I've more recently used my decent phone, again in the tankbag, connected to an Android Auto/CarPlay panel. As the phone is doing the heavy lifting here, running a nav app as well as the GPS chip, it does get warm. I tried a wireless charging puck in this setup and that generated too much heat and the phone throttled and then shut down. I've now reverted to the Givi USB power strip plugged into the phones USB-C port, a fairly low rate of charge, not rapid charging, though this is enough to keep the phone charged whilst navigating via the panel without generating too much heat. Hopefully this will still be the case in hotter climates when in tour, we'll see...
Echoing @Marc.r1 above, I've had a Quadlock system installed for quite a few years and gone through at least three iPhone generations. I also went for the full damper mount and the wireless charger - I wired the charger into a switched live in the fusebox via cutting and hacking together the supplied USB cable to a cheap 5V DCDC step down converter and it's been totally and utterly faultless for over 30k km, so I see no reason for moving away from Quadlock. Totally brilliant.
In short yes in it’s quad lock it heats up, I’ve not had much success in using any of my iPhones as hot spots without them generating a lot of heat and failing. My Son with his Android laughs at iPhone users, I’d swap but for work I need an iPhone as switching would be so much hassle.
Just as a quick aside - I have tried the quadlock case paired with the cheap knock-off mount and this is what I would describe as "ok" the bracket is plastic and the attachment whilst secure has a few millimetres of rotational slop. Would be fine for a cheap phone but not for anything valuable in case you were wondering about the cheap copies.
On the Honda I even have the waterproof cover,as I use it for commuting, in the storage for ever the rain gets that bad. Once you got the kit only need the new mount or case cover if you change phone/bike. Missus had a RS765 which I removed the kit and once I get the Evotech mount it will get fitted to hers. We both got fed up of stopping and looking at the map to see where we were going. I also listen to my music via my Bluetooth EAR headphones
Don’t get Quadlock. Get Peak Design. Much easier to mount and demount your phone one-handed and wearing gloves…
