Picked up this 996r today. 2 owners from new, last owner had it since 2002! Been all over Europe and over to IOM a few times. needs a little TLC, replating, new tyres and service. The original seat unit comes with it, and the Seat is a genuine ATR 998r panel which I’ll be selling along. The left fairing has a tiny crack, but it comes with a genuine ATR replacement panel too - and I’ll sell on the one on the bike as it’s still a very nice presentable panel! chuffed to finally have my hands on a 996r as that’s always been the one I’ve wanted
Major congrats! That's Sam's old father-in-law's 6r, I know that one is special because it still has its original authenticity plaque! Great buy that one with its original/extra parts and recent service. I'm glad a forum member bought it.
Yes! Crawford’s old bike, I met him a few times and yeah it does have its authenticity plaque too. it’s a good bike. I just want to give it a minor refresh and get things like the rearsets and levers back to OEM
Had the panels off today for a mild degrease and clean up. think I’ll work on getting it fairly back to standard for the summer season, and a service/mot and give it a strip and refresh over the winter. a lot of the built up grime has come away nicely with my trusty Surfex HD and Autowheel followed by sdoc100
Any project updates? I've seen your parts sales and wanted ads on FB, along with a couple of other specific threads here. You should periodically post an update to the project. I, for one, would love to follow the progress Maybe it will inject some life into @bettes to post updates on his restoration too lol.
This 996R looks very Scottish. Maybe something along these lines would help with the seat part of the project?
Yes, progress is happening! I decided to just do a light refresh so I can at least get out on it this season and will maybe do a larger tear down over the winter, but as I start on something I always end up going further than I anticipate. So it’s currently in bits I took it for MOT and passed no problems, but just didn’t feel right - it would fight on tip in and want to upright itself but given it was on tyres from 2010 and hasn’t been ridden since 2017 I thought they were the first thing. So, bought some s23s. got the rearsets off, and pazzo levers and they were sold off to the states and sourced some standard ones. the bracket for the Ohlins damper was also over tight so have fixed that. Will see if that sorts the handling out when it’s all back together. Spent £600 or there abouts with Snells on new bits and bobs just waiting on that to arrive. stripped the calipers and cleaned them up as they were a mess, and stripped and cleaned the front brake master cylinder and fitted with OEM levers. Just sourced a standard headlight bucket and air tubes to get this carbon headlight and tubes off. Replaced all the rusty jubilee clips from around the motor. that’s about it for now, just waiting on BG to get my new Ohlins spring in, then I can get my damper off and sent to them to fit it. Will fit my new rose joints to the ride height bar when it’s on peg stands for the shock removal. battery tray is on order as the clip is broke to hold the wiring and also the relay rubber mount it on its way too. Took the 998 seat off and fitted the original back, just waiting for the meshes to arrive and can finish that off. here’s some pics of where it stands! headlight is on the bench for refurb too. Unfortunately it’s got a small crack on the left lense, so if anyone has a spare I’m all ears! I have a bit of an odd personality trait that needs me to close things off in my mind hence I can be a bit relentless in my quest to chase down parts and information! It seriously keeps me awake at night!
Strangely, when I had my 996R I also bought a 998R seat for it as I preferred the look. I liked the exposed carbon section which matched the sections on the side panels and flowed adft from the airbox
