Hi all, As the title suggests... Is there a recommended life cycle for tyres that have been sitting, not mounted? I swapped over my tyres many many years ago and left the old Pirelli corsa tyres from my 848 sitting the garage. Having a tidy out and my Dad found them under a few sheets of cloth etc. They've been in the garage over 5 years and had plenty of life in them when I removed them. Due to age would they be safe to use/sell etc? I can get pics if required and I'm not sure of the date stamp... I'll add it later when they've been fished out. Any advice would be appreciated.
Is your life worth saving £100/two hundred quid? ...lay the bike down on a corner or sprained ankle! Everything is a gamble from stepping out the door it's you're perception of danger or riding style frankly. I now regularly see cars & vans steering at or over the white lines. Because people are scanning updates on their phones on social media accounts or trying too text whilst steering. Which is why I don't have a phone on a mount (which yes I do own) on a motorcycle. Because the tempation to just tippy tap that one reply will turn into a shit-fest spinning event. I cleared out all my six or more HS2 locations on my gps whilst riding & the car behind acted very cautiously leaving plenty of space I noticed yesterday. As it took a couple of minutes messing about but I was just chilling 54mph or so into visit my laundrette at banbury.
My flow chart would be- Are you a motorbike courier who waits for the metal scraping noise before changing brake pads? Yes- use the tyres, I’m sure they will be fine. No- bin them.
If they've been kept in the dry and are not race slicks then they will be fine to use. Inspect the surface and inner carcass for any noticeable discoloration. Or sell them if you are unconvinced, but don't just bin them, that's a complete waste. You are probably more likely to lose the front on a brand new set with the mold release agent residue still on the surface.
In your shoes I'd: Check them for cracks if none then Check the date stamp if 2015 or newer then Check the tread depth if 3mm or more across three-quarters (3/4) of the tyre's width, with visible tread remaining on the other quarter and if thats also fine Use them and enjoy your riding!
