The casings on my 996r are showing signs of its age now and as it’s a bike that’s been used for euro trips and TT, it’s a bit weathered. any ideas on cleaning products, or processes that might make the cases a little prettier ?
If you do find a wonder cleaner, please share...In the past I've always ended up doing a mechanical clean..and it's taken ages.
You will need at some point need to remove the engine and have it vapour blasted to clean all of the oxidation/corrosion and dirt. It's the only way to restore the original cast aluminium finish to the exact same texture and colour/sheen it had originally. I do it all the time on classic car intake manifolds. The good news is it's safe to do without cracking the case and stripping it bare. You just need to remove everything you can and do a superb job of masking the rest. Short of that, I'd just stick to a water-based degreaser like Simple Green that's diluted with a soft brush. That way you don't risk altering the finish or staining it. For steel items that are rusty, there is a brush-on solution made by Evapo-Rust that's in gel form. You brush on for a dozen hours, clean, repeat as necessary.
Just raw as sand cast. Only the die cast engine cases were painted. I prefer the raw to the engine paint removing itself lol.
Making a bit of progress - tested out here, a behind the brake cylinder and along the right side of the sump.. Definitely getting better
