I believe it's just a natural correction. These bikes were overpriced and sold previously when money was cheap and plentiful. It is now a different world. I can only see things becoming cheaper in the foreseeable future with regards to most classic vehicles. Buy low, sell high.
Market is on its arse at the mo. I have seen bikes crazy cheap and they are still there a month later. People’s income is dropping in real world terms (well apart from the top 5%) and ‘toys’ will always be the first thing to give if money is tight. Plus the fact that a lot of people who remember these bikes ‘back in the day’ are either too old to ride or dead. Bikes I never thought I would ever afford are getting closer to affordability. There is always a plus side
That would be cool! 80s stuff is doing ok so might need a while yet. 50s/60s stuff is dropping quickly and 70s stuff seems static. But nothing is doing great, I keep looking at RD350LCs which were the hot ticket the last few years and even they have dropped a bit. Would love an RG or RD500!!!
Most markets are depressed, the once booming house market around here is now sat fairly and squarely on its flabby arse, prices dropping like a stone and stuck on a frozen market place, the only thing i see holding up is the market in puppies, went bonkers around covid and still climbing, nobody can resist a puppy, everything else can wait.
Plenty of money around but people are nervous of what’s coming so not spending. Added to @TBay comments above.
I was talking to one of the auctioneers in April who said a 1974 750 Sport which the seller bought for £40k in 2021 from a certain ‘broker’ specialising in investment motorcycles sold for £20k. Think he did well at that tbh…
Times have changed and hot money has disappeared. Good news in the end for the real enthusiast with a realistic budget
Not a classic, but I priced my SP2 to sell (or at least I thought I did) and I'm getting zero interest - not even low-ball offers or enquiries. Same for some other things I'd like to sell that aren't exactly at the cheap end of the market. It seems that there's not all that much interest unless it's an absolute bargain price.
All "toys" have collapsed as markets, we are seeing the same for used luxury watches (down by at least 20% over the past 12 months) and classic cars (20-30% drop?). Where they stop is everyone's guess although there are signs of more stable prices lately. There is still plenty of "new money" out there but people are a lot more careful now. Many of these items were way overpriced anyway and when the speculators move out the market shrinks and there is nowhere for the "toys" to go anymore or sell them cheap (read "normal prices"). I also have a feeling that people who bought their toys at the hype of the market they are not DIY capable to maintain their older bikes/cars/watches and they've eventually realised to maintain these machines it costs big money with current labour prices and for certain parts. And now they are trying to sell and we see more toys for sale than the market can absorb hence a drop (considerable) in prices.
I think prices are now reaching their 'correct' level after being pumped up way too high by people using them as investments rather than summat they really do want. And, as others have mentioned, prices will rise and fall as the relevant age group comes into and then leaves the market as finances & personal circumstances change. As for the two in the first post the first one is a 900 SS made to looks like a 750 green frame with ropey indicators so who knows what else may be bodged up on it. This will, of course, put off the 'all original' not to mention cautious punters. The MHR does look OEM apart from the rhs side panel having being cut away for a possible carb/trumpet changes. Again, one for the all original boys to avoid.
To anybody lusting after an RG500, my advice would be to be careful. I had one in the mid eighties that was nearly new, and it was awful. It didn't go, it didn't stop and it didn't handle. Shite tyres on 16 in rims... a claimed 80 bhp (very optimistic) It did drink fuel and smelt nice however! I sold mine after a few months and bought a GSXR1100G, which was amazing by comparison - I kept that for about 12 years (and I am a big 2 stroke fan)
