I've worked in procurement for too long I think. It's surprising how often 'difficult' suppliers Kids, Partners, Parents, or even pets are ill. Well above the national average if my experience is anything to go by.
so i would like to say thank you to everyone who posted, it has been a good help, im not out of the woods yet, this time yesterday all i had in my head was worst case scenario thoughts, so its been reassuring, hopefully this thread will help someone in the future i had thoughts of ditching ducati and going back to a honda or a kwaka, what a thought?? we all know Ducati ownership can be a ride, but i am now even more sure keeping these babies going with all the grief is all worth it, looking forwards to getting back on road one of my little philosophies in life is to always try to be calm, respectful and polite, it get can you any where, crack a joke, make them laugh and its game over, you've won. @southlondonCBR I think that’s a fair resolution for both sides and I hope a) you get the bike back on the road sooner rather than later and b) it’s not as expensive for them or you as it could be.
back to square one so it turns out one of the plastic oil pump gears has failed and broken, there is metal in the oil. they are saying it not caused by over filling with oil, and i hate to say it am inclined to agree, although i wish it was cant see how 100ml too much oil is going to blow and engine, it would be a common problem, all over forums etc i am done now with this bike, owes me well over £12K, i have spent loads on it, money no object, all OEM parts, oil etc, i seem to spend more time hating the fucking thing than loving it. pidcock triumph who sold it have gone i offered it to a breaker for £5500 and he had no interest, do i get it running and sell it on cheap? part ex with a dealer and get A V2? or turn my back on ducati and buy a fireblade?
How much does the shop want to repair it? Is it worth asking them for some goodwill gesture? As they have the engine apart, I presume, it might be worth paying for them to repair and rebuild it so that you at least have a working bike to sell. In its current state, it will be worth very little and be very difficult to sell. I genuinely feel sorry for you. It could happen to any of us. But don't let it get you down. Shit happens. Make a plan and move on
its £1200 plus parts, ive pretty much told them to go ahead, it will be a complete engine rebuild, and they will guarantee all work labour, as you say it worthless otherwise. just had a new water pump on the car, £1035 (still leaking) new tyres on car £880, tyres on van £360, new ignition in van £1450 (mercedes) a funeral and a holiday, now this, and original bike service £530 i suppose ill make a plan when i get it back, which is a long long way away

Easy for me to say, but put the other (non-bike) expenses out of your mind. Just bad timing. If the bike costs £1200 to get done, get it done - it’s worth a lot less as it is. Unless you’re prepared to break it yourself and have a shed full of parts waiting to sell. When I first got my 1098, I went through 3-4 months of stuff going wrong. A few got sorted by the dealer (pain getting the bike picked up from Essex to BHam and back twice (and the waiting!) but they were good about things) and other things I had to suffer and pay for. It threw a belt last summer and that plus a desmo service cost me a fair bit, as well as all the stuff I’ve paid for over the years (an EVR clutch was £1k ish for example). That hating feeling? I know it well - you hate the bastard and can’t think of anything except getting rid of it and moving on BUT you will get to a point where it’s sorted and you can enjoy it again.
yep 100% agree, i believe if you want to drive on UK roads you have to be prepared to swallow bills, been a cack few months, but they are just parts like belt, bolts and pumps, eventually you get through it and have trouble free motoring. the van was a bastard, locked up and stranded me 3 times, then mercedes lost it east london, but by going to main dealer got main dealer guarantees, the £1450 was money well spent in the end paying it is no problem, it stings for a day or so, but there are loads who drive who get wiped out when something goes wrong with their car, they either scrabble about for a super cheap mechanic, put it off or get the bus. swallow the bill, ride the bike for a while, and see if the hate turns back to love
If it were me, I’d get it repaired, sell it and buy something Japanese, they don’t constantly break, you just ride them. I’ve owned my Gsxr 1000 since new in 2009 and it has 16000 miles on it, it’s taken me all over and never let me down once. Just my opinion though.
