Steven Walker, who runs The Ferry Inn in Salcombe, has equipped each beer garden table with water pistols intended for customers to use in warding off the pesky birds. Geoff Edmond, an RSPCA wildlife crime investigator, praised the birds: "Gulls are brilliant birds...They might be noisy, they might take our chips, but they deserve our respect just like any other creature." However, Devon tourism officials have backed Mr Walker's bird-deterring methods, claiming the approach "simply encourages the birds to fly away without causing them any harm."
