  3. Who have you booked with?
My dad has asked a company who we went to mugello with a few years ago about a package just before Xmas and they were waiting on ticket prices.

  4. I received my email yesterday - that Brno tickets are now available. Before that I had to fill in my email address and wait. So the tickets for Brno have only very recently become generally available.

I have a MotoGP online account, and they have a ticket section - I chose my ticket from there.

  5. A few more days and it will be time to put the bike on he ferry and head off.

Looking at the route options, will depend a bit on the weather - but I do have an open day ticket for the Grossglockner in Austria (€35).

So that will not decide the route completely, but adds a bit of focus to the route. Also it covers the wish to see some mountains along the way.

The Swiss Alps are mostly in the South of the country and it gets a bit expensive -and the best places seem to be booked up. Also not sure how long it would take, how many days/night to book. Looked at Italy as well, but really starting to drift of course. I will have to do those on another trip, rather than en-route to the Czech Republic !

So the Grossglockner it is - pretty epic route up and down the mountain. It is more on the way and there is some flexibility on the arrival day - just book a hotel as I get there.

Happy days - going to the Grossglockner

  6. Sachsenring is kind of on the way if you get a wriggle on lol.

  7. I'm in the process of setting up a bike transport business to do bespoke UK-Euro destinations. Won't be up and running in time to help you out for this one but might help some other members looking to take some of the effort out of a trip like this

  8. Just thought to update this story. Whilst away I just had the phone which is okay for a picture or two.

Very nearly did not have a ticket. I left home with the downloadable ticket still not on my account - no ticket. Checked emails in the junk folder. It seems I have two MotoGP ticket accounts !! and the Brno ticket was in the "other account" ! DOH !!:D

Missed the ferry to France, due to faffing about at work - missed check in. So they put me on the ferry for the next day. No big loss, just a few quid to move dates.

First day St Malo - Dijon. Mostly without touching a Peage. Hot and sunny. Chose Dijon as still not sure about route to take. Switzerland and Austria had some heavy rain sweeping through. Italy Sunny and 38 C

I chose the route across Austria and take my chances with being caught in the rain, that was sweeping through quite quickly. Rather that than 38 C of Northern Italy. I got one drenching in Austria - it really rained, it really did. Plus all the spray from the road. I bought a can of water repellent from the outdoor shop and emptied the whole thing on my jacket, outside the store :D Anyway, the sun came out and within couple of hours riding I was dry. The rain shower was very heavy but passed through very quickly. So that was the route

Had to pass on visiting the Grossglockner on way out, due to concerns with thunderstorms and heavy rain showers - 2,500 meters up a mountain is not place to be on a motorbike in that kind of weather, so decided to do that on the way back.

Only stop in Switzerland was the Ace Cafe in Luzern. A bizarre encounter - of misunderstandings. That went like this broadly:

What do you want - er food and drink. We only have this to eat - what do want to drink. Coke. Food arrives. I didn't order that - yes you did - OK I will pay anyway. Not paying anything - takes food and drink away - I call the dude Mad and get on my bike and leave, still hungry and thirsty. Bizarre.

Next day enter Czech Republic, through the back roads. Instead of the main road that goes Vienna to Brno, I just cut the corner off. Forests and a bit of rain. Nice enough. Little villages seemed busy with people and goings on. Lots or roadworks and closed roads. The key was to read the diversion signs, not just trust the sat nav to deliver you. The diversions were well signposted, you just had to take the time to work out how far the road works extended so you could rejoin in the right place - just calm down and not rush off only to have to come back again.

I did ride down a bit of freshly laid tarmac - this is a bit sticky, put my foot down and it stuck to the road ! :D I got waived back. Funny.

Stayed in Telc - I booked the Hotel in February on the basis of being as close to the Brno circuit as possible. Brno hotels already sold out even then. I got there and thought it rather a pretty place. They have got a castle and a big old cobbled square. Turns out it is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts visitors in its own right.

Missed Friday's track action and the rain. Went on Saturday, but took longer to get there due to road works. Missed Q1 & Q2 but saw the Sprint race. Traffic management was well organised, and drivers polite allowing bikes through. Not a single beeping or horns. Bikes moved into the oncoming bus lane, and then moved into the car lanes when the buses came towards us. No beeping or grief from the car drivers - we pulled in - and pulled out again once the buses had passed. Directed to a parking area for bikes. Got a wrist band and paid EUR 11 I think it was. It seemed that only the British bikes had massive padlocks and chains. I zip tied a bag to the bike and zip tied it closed. Walked around in a T shirt. Hot.

My ticket was Grandstand T5. Good seat, but not covered. No issues at all with getting there on a bike - facilities all good - shaded area - a big screen if you wanted to watch there. Food, drink, all good. Leaving was no problem. People were decent. You could pay for everything with your normal UK Bank card - tap and pay was no issue. I did carry about Czech Crowns 3,000 in cash - which was about £100. Changed it back before leaving the country.

I have done quite a few of these MotoGP trips on the bike. Next time I want to spend a little extra and do maybe a Track walk - something on top of just a seat. Nothing wrong with that, just done quite a few and want to see a bit more next time.

Weather had improved. Left the Czech Republic in the sunshine, getting warmer. Did to Southern Austria in a day, to get within striking range of the Grssglockner - weather forecast had improved with dry roads.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road was the highlight of the trip. Approaching from the South there is a few miles of trundling through delightful Austrian scenery, before the climb out of the valley to the road entrance. Broadly there is a road that runs up/down with an entrance / exit back onto the main highway. There is also a road that, on the map, appears to be a dead-end. That is the one you want. That is the main event. The highest point on the road itself is 2,504 meters (8,215 feet). There is a little "hump" that you can drive over that will add a few meters to that - but clearing 2,500 meters is already enough for me !

You wind your way around, maybe getting a glimpse of snow and then the valley appears with the Grossglockner on the other side of the valley - rock and ice. The glacier is in retreat, but still freezes overnight even in the summer. Took loads of pictures, videos to get it all in. Very impressed with that.

Then rejoined the road and left by the Northern route. Loads of pictures, amazing spectacle and did not rush it at all.

Next stop the Baden-Baden and the B500 in Germany, via Munich and Stuttgart. Quiet a lot of roadworks. Hot. Filtered until coming up behind a Police Car, then just left the motorway system at the next chance.

Kept loosing the B500, got lost, went into France by mistake, came back, drifted off the B500 again. Drizzle and thick heavy fog.

That was really the last event of the trip. From then it was head for home. Made it to St Malo a day early, which was nice to relax for the day.

    Good Hotels B&B - Dijon

View of the start line from T5 (row 4). Holding up the red seat cushions during the signing of the National Anthem - There were red, white, blue sections to make up the Czech flag.

On to Austria and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. This valley comes into view - quite impressive. On the road here you are at over 8,000 feet or 2,500 meters - on the road.

Some of the fantastic roads in the area. Glad it was dry !

Crossing the river Rhine. Getting lost trying to find the B500. This old bridge had the end section made differently of plain steel. I figured a repair from WW2 action. This part of the old bridge deserved a stop to get a few pictures.

B500, Black Forest, Germany Fog. Actually not sure I am on the B500. Seemed to have gained altitude into the mist.

Back in France. Stopped at a service station. Saw something unusual, still moving, so picked it up and took a picture - Asian Hornet according to Google search thingy.
