  10. The etymology dates back to the mid 19th century when horse drawn wagons (probably covered carts) used to transport meat from the market to butchers’ premises. Similar looking horse drawn wagons (and allegedly butchers wagons at times) were used to transport prisoners, cadavers and used as ambulances, hence the association. Ambulances have been called meat wagons where ever I’ve lived in the UK as far back as my memory goes :thinkingface: Andy
