Yt12b B4 Battery.

  1. Hello All,

When it comes to electrics I know less than I do about thermonuclear fission. So basically I have a query, would a 996 battery (number in the title) be suitable for a 91-97 900SS (which normally takes a YB16AL-A2)

"Why not just use a standard battery?" you ask! Because its going on this bike, which has a 900SS engine fitted. The battery is at the back on a tray inside the seat hump.

    Cheers for any advice.

  2. Any 16Amp hour battery with 180 to 200 CCA with the dimensions you need will do. Unfortunately the YT12 won’t have the punch. Most battery web sites will let you search on size which should give you a choice of batteries. Andy

  3. Cheers Andy. In real terms, what does that mean? Won't start? Won't hold a charge? The horn and lights won't work? (remember I know nowt about the magic of electrickery)

There are no battery's at all at the dimensions I need at 16Ah with a CCA of 210. The closest I can get is a 13Ah AGM battery with a CCA of 180

  4. Actually just seen another AGM battery at 16Ah and 240CCA, which is also 15mm taller, but 17mm deeper. It would fit with a chop and change to the battery housing on the GF seat unit, a proper pain, but not impossible !

  5. Keeping it simple ;), the amp hours is a storage capacity and the CCA is the highest current the battery can deliver over a short period of time. The smaller the storage capacity, the fewer times you can ask the battery to deliver the CCA. Journeys with lots of stops and starts are likely to drain the smaller storage capacity battery before the generator can recharge what’s been taken out. In practice, a day out with a couple of stops for comfort breaks, a stop for lunch and a stop for fuel if you haven’t combined it with a comfort break, shouldn’t stretch the lower amp hour capacity battery. Hope this helps. Andy

  6. Cheers, I started to build the bike at the age of approx 45.... I am now 60 (2 weeks ago) and my hips struggle with putting my grollies and socks on! A 'day out' on the torturous F1 seat unit is probably not a realistic option .....:D

  7. I'm in my early 70's so know your pain :joy: Andy

  8. Try a BS Battery BT12B4-SLA it’s the same size as the Yuasa YT12 but is 210CCA and can by positioned in any position being a sealed lead acid battery.

Alternatively, if size is your over-riding consideration yet you need a high CCA, look at lithium batteries, just make sure the regulator/rectifier fitted is a mosfet type suitable for use with a lithium battery.
