996 Oil Cooler Leak - Repair Or Replace

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by sam996S, Sep 1, 2025.

  1. I am 90% sure my oil cooler is leaking - yet to absolutely confirm it is from the fins, not the outlet fitting.

I thought I'd look around for a replacement. Can't find anything in the UK (some in Europe).

Assuming repairs are the same process as a radiator. Maybe a pressure test and repair is something to explore?

As this is my track bike build (yes, still in build phase) I would be happy with a retrofit, or other bodge-to-make-good approach.

    Any sage advice here?

  2. depending on how well you know the history of the bike, unless somebody has manhandled it or it's been damaged, then it's possible that it's a union that's leaking rather than the actual oil cooler, as the standard unions do have a habit of fracturing after a decade or two, And it can be difficult to confirm but wiping it all clean around the area repeatedly if necessary, and then watching the area like a hawk, should expose the actual source of the leak.

  3. Thanks Chris. I do need to diagnose it properly. Just hoping it isn't the core as that seems difficult to replace now.

  4. Definitely repair the one you have.
Second hand ones are very difficult to find, even damaged ones and are ridiculously expensive.

  5. Plus you have no guarantee they don't have the same or different issues that yours does ( been there, done that..... )

  6. 848/1198 coolers are quite easy to fit. In case you can get hold a decent/cheap one.

  8. Testastretta oil coolers won't work on a 996 without modification. You're better fixing/recoring your existing one

  9. I see you are only Twickenham Sam - if you discover it's the unit/matrix at fault then i might have one but i'm a little rusty as to how they differ model to model so would need pictures or part number cross ref etc.

  10. They do fit. Just need to mod the top bracket.
