The pool at the campsite was unexpected in Estepone. Spent sometime -not really enough- in the old town area of Alicante. Pressed on up the coast to the Costa Brava to meet old friends. I lived here for six summers back in my twenties, really fun to be back.
I’m pondering a few days in Alicante without access to a car and with my 15yo son in October. Would you recommend? Great trip and travelogue by the way. And the van is amazing. Things I should have done with my Vivaro but never did it will. Hurrumph.
I've been many times before but couldn't drive past without stopping. Alicante for me is city with a local feel, right on the water with some lovely beaches (Playa Positiguet & San Juan amongst others). The castle is cool and has a museum. But the whole place is very much a Mediterranean delight -palm trees and little squares with cafes and restaurants- and there's plenty of everything for a few days or longer. The weather should be warm and the cost of living is inexpensive which is another bonus. Enjoy.
I grant you I see a point to these vans, now. Shame they're just not 'me', because I'm obviously missing out on something.
I'm not sure it's really 'me' either. More if a means to an end. I think my trip would have been tough on my bike, whereas with this glorified caravan it's been easy. I wouldn't want to do the live in a van all the time palaver. Yet I've met quite a few that do and they are quite content with their lot.
I will go to Cuil Bay, but just not this trip. Hopefully when I do you will be somewhere there yourself! Not sure when I'm going to be home, a couple more weeks about I guess. When summer is over, it's over!
the Cuil bay thing was a lil tongue in cheek. but saying all that, it was v,much like this from late march all the way through to mid june this year. looks awesome.
If you at some point go far, far North, the beach at Sandwood Bay is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. You have to leave your vehicle and hike something like 6km to the beach. I once wild camped there and cooked a three course meal on a trangia, with a half bottle of wine..an experience I'll never, ever forget. (I was on the 999 at the time and literally just left all my bike gear sitting on the bike and trusted the perfection of the moment) Edit...found a photo..
Sounds like a place to put on my list! Though maybe the 6km could/ would be done on an electric off reader?
