  3. For some unknown reason I forgot about Triumph exhaust stubs. Most of my workshop history, right from the start, has been on Meriden Triumph Twins, every one of which had exhaust stubs (the screw-in spigots the exhaust pipe headers push over and are secured onto by the finned clamps).

I'm not concerned this is the early sign of dementia, on account of it seems the most recent memories go first. It really bothered me that I couldn't remember my T140 head - but I do now. It was new. The original wasn't in great shape but I'd spent so much with Wilemans they let me have what they said was their last splayed-port T140 head - and can picture it clearly now - with it's never-used exhaust stubs. I'd never seen an unused T140 head before. It was lovely. I wish I'd kept it.

But, apparently they changed to push-in headers in later years. I'm sure I knew about (and disapproved of) this at the time. It will have coincided with the discontinuation of splayed inlet ports (to save money by making only one type of head, for both the Bonnie and the single carb Tiger TR7. Despite part of the charm of the Bonneville being the splayed-port look).

    Note, unthreaded.

The sprung hub TR5 I posted a couple of months or so back, appears to have push-in headers.

However, most others (rigid frame) too appear to have stubs. Also most Tiger 80s appear to have stubs.

Or, possibly, screw-in clamping rings, over push-in pipes. That's what they look like on the TR5. And on one picture I have of a T140D (the other appears to have finned clamps over exhaust stubs!)

See the headers are straight. Not flared for going over stubs.

I wondered where I got the term 'stubs'? I've called them that since forever, but suddenly it seems a strange word. Well, according to my 1960 Parts Book, Triumph called them Exhaust Pipe Adaptors. On the other hand, Stan Shenton, in Triumph Tuning calls them stubs!

Actually I'll tell you what the unknown reason is. When you don't access this information, it becomes difficult to retrieve. Memory is supposed to deteriorate as we age - but maybe it's just that it looks that way because we rarely access what we were once so enthusiastic about? The cues become obscure with disuse. But if eventually, it comes back to you, there's nothing wrong with your memory!

  4. That reminds me of a Norton 16h. I almost bought one a few years ago, it was a daily rider for the owner and in oily rag condition (which I like). He didn’t want much for it either but I hesitated and it was sold

  5. Aha! I see - screw in stubs, push fit spigots, screw in clamps or finned clamps and flared or straight pipes.... sheesh there's more than enough there for a substantial entry into the Dull Men's Club library :D

And true about rarely accessed memories - many years ago I could read ISUP messages in their raw hex format. But only because I was looking at them for pretty much the whole day every day. I'd have trouble with just the hex conversions now... : unamused:

Anyhoo in keeping with random photos here some screw in stubs & push fit spigots...

  6. I recently sold a T120 splayed head with screw in exhaust stubs,I have always called them stubs, but don't know where I obtained the term.I do remember the 'Stubs' had a tendencey to unscrew no matter how tight you did the finned clamps.

  7. My T140V (screw-in) stubs are as per the first picture. The head also has 5/16-threaded grub-screw holes for added security (that I don't use). I think it was a really daft idea to have push-in stubs on the Triumph twins as they'd surely vibrate and damage the heads so they became a piss-poor fit. Hence the screw-in stubs...

Non-old-Brit-bike owners can now wake from their boredom slumber...

  10. I wrote a couple of Visual Basic scripts, just basic proof of concept stuff, but a bit more than 'Hello World!'. I can't remember the first thing about it now.

I made a boot CD for installing Windows. Select it from a menu and it ran without user interaction. The last item on the menu was 'about'. Select that one and it displayed "It's about" and read the time from the BIOS. :D

  12. I don't think we've made an exhaustive study yet. I reckon I'll just drop the odd image here now & again...
