848Evo Main Bearing gone

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Fire_2, Sep 16, 2013.

  1. 9000mile old, 848 Evo Main Bearing gone oh joy!

anyone else been here? worth upgrading anything while the engine is in little tiny bits?

    or just trade it in...

  2. Sounds bad luck. Rest of the bike what you want, ie all the bits you'd buy again? If so maybe find another engine or get a 1098 if you fancy something different. 848 challenge finishes soon, there may be some motors spare coming up...

  3. 9000 miles! Not good. Are you the only owner? If you are and the bike has full service history I'd be asking ducati for some help. There was someone on ducatisti who had this and ducati stumped up for parts, they paid labour.

shouldn't really be happening on a 9k mile bike. I only ask if you're the only owner as if you're not you can't vouch for its previous life and care. If you are, and have used the same dealer for all servicing then you/ they will know the bikes history and it could add weight to your case. Ducati are pretty good at helping out if there are catastrophic failures before there should be, but don't hold me to it!

while its apart may as well get belts, shims done and all other bearings etc checked.

  4. I've had the bike since new, its had an easy life!

just past 2 years old, (2/3 weeks over)
Ducati are going to front the parts and labour thankfully! other wise around £1600...

The shop is just about to order the parts from Italy and want to know if I would like any extra parts changing (gearbox bearings) and if I would like the engine 'blueprinted' for some extra power ect

    anyone had this done?

Pretty happy with the power, (full 70mm termi, cams dialled in)

  5. Depends who the dealer is...nothing wrong with blueprinting but depends on what they wish to charge you

  6. Happy days. I'd get them to check the selector spring as they can wear through and fracture, but I'm not sure if these were modded for the Evo.

if you've got the cash I'd get them to check every bearing and replace if necessary. IMHO only really worth getting it blue printed if you like tracking it.

  7. Blueprinting, as it has been described to me, is not performance but longevity related. Everything as it should be rather than within tolerances. Its only when you start knife-edging, cams work, head work, squish to min etc that performance ups and reliability falls. I'm not an engineer, just relaying others comments

  8. I stand corrected.

  9. Its only hearsay :upyeah:

  10. Someone on a US Ducati forum had a similiar issue. When he posted about it several other owners all with 2011 Evo's had similar failures. Maybe something in a batch of motors or something.

The Evo motor had uprated mains i think so shouldn't fail in normal use like that.

  11. not a 848 but my dad spun a main bearing in my 1098s after only 7000 miles.

  12. or is that heresy?

  13. thanks for the input guys :D

I'll try and pop over and speak to the tech tomorrow! he sets up the shops race bikes in the 848 championship, So he should know he's stuff?!

(will try and get a cheeky pic too!)

  14. Sorry to hear Fire_2, I think 'DucatiGirl'* had similar experience but possibly with higher mileage. It would be interesting to see if anything is revealed that would help point to such an early failure.

*memory is shot but I think that was name on here - bike was white.

  15. Sorry to hear this, god I hope this isn't a common thing!!

  16. You are correct Chris, she's been very quiet on here, was a regular on Ducatisti.

  17. Have heard of quite a few 1098s losing big ends but not many 848s

  18. gosh that sucks. good luck

  19. thats who it was. Better memory than me. She's sold her bike now.
