Hi all, After some advice, I have a slight weep of coolant from the larger freeze plug on left hand side of the vertical cylinder. Only trouble it’s the hardest one to get at to replace because of the frame being in the way. Has anyone had this problem. Can you tap them in on the angle or is it a case of dropping out the engine
I’m pretty sure it’s coolant, as I believe the plug is there in case coolant freezes. I might be wrong? It’s not oily to the touch either.
It does look like a freeze plug, is your coolant green? You really need to tap them in square with a bit of sealant around the edge
Agreed, going to be difficult if not impossible to re-seal it, best option is to replace it (they're cheap enough) and with a good sealant but, as above you really need to be able to work on it square. I had to replace them in my Monster's cylinder heads (not for freezing though as air cooled so no coolant) and was easy enough to do on the bench. Maybe you can remove enough engine bolts to pivot the engine round enough on the swingarm? otherwise maybe easier to remove the head.
I had another look last night and I can get a 1/4 drive 11mm socket in the wrong way around with a 1/4 inch extension bar into the wrong larger open end which sits virtually straight so think that may work. I have a new one ready to go. Would you use a little sealant around the edge of the new, I’ve read mixed thoughts online about whether to or not. What sealant would you use? Appreciate the advice
I used Dirko HT red sealant; https://www.elring.com/products/sealing-compounds/dirko This was on recommendation of the company that re-plated the cylinders though, I'm sure threebond etc. do something similar. Anyway, it's been fine with no leaks.
