So I have a nice set of 5 spokes on my 916sp I want to transfer to my project bike that has 1098 forks, has any done the swap and if so what did it entail? cheers
I’m not sure if the 1098 forks will accommodate the mechanical speedo drive There used to be a spacer that was commercially available to fill the gap made by deleting the mechanical drive. Andy
I have 1098 Ohlins forks on my 916. 916 wheel fits using 1098 spindle, nut & right side spacer but, unless you're fitting a mechanical speedo then you'll need a 30mm spacer to fill the cutout in the wheel as the speedo drive fits in the wheel not the forks. You can fit the mechanical speedo but there is no locating lug as on a 916 but, once tightened, it will stay where it's put just need to line it up correctly. You will need 15mm offset discs in 6 hole configuration to align with the radial calipers, these are available (though more expensive than the 10mm versions) as they were fitted to 748R and IIRC 998R.
I did this conversion on my 998 and as above, larger offset discs required and a spacer for the speedo drive, otherwise pretty straightforward.
Awesome, thanks all I will draw up a spacer and get it machined, does anyone have a link to the disks?
This spacer is interesting as it is larger to protect the bearing; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/26718474...WKs5POg9vJW9oQ5IIE/ICEDQsBc=|tkp:BFBMlNb0k65m But, otherwise just a 30mm long, 25mm ID spacer is required. As for the discs, they're quite rare and therefore expensive. There are many sellers that will tell you they can sell the correct part but will turn out to be a 10mm offset because they don't understand the difference and to complicate matters, not all 748R had used 15mm offset so they might even be selling you the correct part in theory. I'd try Mode Performance; https://www.modeperformance.co.uk/ were very helpful when I needed new 15mm carriers for my 916, 15mm HPK discs a few years back.
Found an old thread with some good info https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/brake-disc-offset.19254/ I will pick up an old Speedo and get the spacer out, then order some of these 5mm spacers.
The bushing from the speedo drive will obviously work fine (you could even just fit the drive with no cable). As for the disc spacers, I know some will disagree with me but, personally I wouldn't use them. I looked into this when I first fitted radial calipers to my 916, I actually did a test fit using shims and found 2 things I wasn't happy with; 1. Spacing the disc out 5mm brings the head of the bolts 5mm further out meaning they get close to everything, more of an issue if you're fitting the speedo drive where they were close enough to interfere with the cable etc. but either way I didn't like it. 2. Fitting the spacer behind the disc means the disc itself no longer sits around the flange of the wheel (unless it's got a 10mm flange) so the disc is no longer held firmly by being a tight fit to the wheel, rather only by the bolts. The above points may or may not worry you but I couldn't live with them, especially the second. I am fully expecting some to disagree and/or receive some hate mail for these comments but that is my opinion.
I’m with you on this, plenty of people have probably gone with spacers because there was obviously a market for the parts but not for me. Andy
Not entirely sure but I might have a pair of 6 hole, 15mm offset discs in my spares box. I’ll see what I’ve got. Andy
