Hi All, I fitted a set of Metzeler roadtech 01 SE before my 10 days trip to the alps back in June covered 2150 miles fully loaded with luggage and now have just got back from a 4 tour of wales with luggage 850 miles and in between I have probably done another general 500 miles and it looks to me that the tyre is toast now ball park I have done 3500 miles. Now I do ride in spirited fashion. Would you expect greater mileage ? Or too much pressure or something else. I was just expecting a little more mileage.
The benefit of the superb grip of the 01SE comes with the penalty of a short life. On my 1200 Multistrada, the front tyre would last 2500 miles tops. Tyre pressures can affect the life of the tyre but IMO, touring fully loaded, you were fortunate to get the mileage you did. On my Multistrada V4, I’ve started using the Dunlop Roadsmart 4 and am getting much better wear, if marginally less confidence at the ragged edge which I think is more to do with the higher kerb weight of the Pikes Peak compared to my 1200. Andy
Plus the wear is mostly in the middle, indicating being on straight(ish) roads for a decent amount of time. This is where Conti Road Attack/Michelin Road/ Pirelli Angel come in to their own. They will still wear at contact point though.
Thanks you for replies I am just going to need to buy new set tyres and now the question why ones . I must say that I really like those Metzeler excellent grip. Better start trawling the forum for ideas.
I've been using Angel GT2's, probably since their introduction, I like them for both wet and dry grip, and predictable performance, however its seldom that I can get more than 3k miles from them. So I'd say you're probably getting a reasonable mileage for the type of riding you do. Just returned from Spain and Portugal, 2 up with luggage, this was my tyre at 2400 miles on the V4 Pikes Peak, fortunately it didn't rain .
Thanks for feedback I don’t feel as bad now on the mileage I got on those metzelers , I also forgot to mention this was on Multistrada V4s same power characteristics as the PP.
Z8s used to last a long time. 8-10k on rear but I found the 01s were much reduced interms of life. The z8s were a brilliant tyre and the grip trade off didn’t seem great enough on 01s to warrant the drop in life span. Still great tyres.
I got 6.5k out of my 01SE, including just over 4k miles around Italy, 2 up, and 1.5k on a boys trip to Pyrenees. The rest was Sunday rides in Wales. But then we may not be the same weight or you may pack heavier, so it's hard to compare. And yes, mine also wore more in the centre. Now using Trail III and they seem a bit more road orientated than the Trail II.
Thank SteveMat for the information I was kinda expecting that sort of mileage, but nevermind. The confidence those tyres give is excellent and I would consider them again. Do you think that maybe the tyre pressure could lead to premature wear ?
Possibly. If you run them high then the centre will wear quicker (weight spread over less area). I take a battery tyre inflator with me and check at the start of each day's riding. There can be huge variation in temperature between the mountains and the coast and hence the starting pressure. But yes, I agree, I really rate the 01SE and have used them since the 01 came out, on my previous bikes (Z1000SX). Will probably try the 02 after the Trail III.
Temps with summer riding, road surface, spirited throttle movement, long rides with full tire heat and overnight pillion weight are all contributors. My rear Road 6 was just short lived also at 3600 miles, 5793 ks. Love the Road 6 but put a Roadtech 01SE on this time hoping to get more miles. The Road 6 has faster turn-in on the Multi 1260, whereas the 01SE provides a greater sense of stability, which is unnecessary on this bike. The wear appears to be the same, so I will return to the Road 6 and its astronomical expense.
Yep - sounds about right for mileage...i normally dont get more than 2k out of a set of supercorsa's for example...
