Decided to replace the pinch bolts and caliper mounting bolts on my 93 Monster, thanks to Expat Jack for his freebie pinch bolts and I’ve managed to find some matching new plated mounting bolts. Is it advisable to remove the caliper completely and then remove the pinch bolts or can you loosen the pinch bolts while the caliper still mounted ( too much force on mounting bolts ) then remove the caliper and hold whilst removing the pinch bolts ? Removing the caliper and banjo bolt then bleeding brakes is sadly outwith my knowledge and tools etc..
Just to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, by the pinch bolts you mean the 4 bolts which hold the two halves of the caliper together, yes? If so, and if all you’re doing is replacing what appears to be 4 stainless steel bolts in your photo, then leave the caliper mounted to the fork, remove and replace one bolt at a time. If you loosen off all 4 you’ll just get brake fluid leaking out everywhere. Also, unless the caliper is mounted to the fork, or held in a vice once removed, you’ll never be able to hold it on your hand to undo the bolts or re torque them. When you replace the caliper mounting bolts just do them one at a time too.
Yes…just noticed the last pinch bolt pictured below is slightly covered by the fork leg. If I slacken off the top mounting bolt do you think the caliper would move enough to remove the last pinch bolt ?
Tap bolt heads first and to be doubly sure apply some heat(being ultra cautious of any hoses and tyres obvs). Take care not to round off the bolt heads so make sure your hex socket is a snug fit.
If you use a long reach hex you’ll not need to undo the top caliper retaining bolt. These things (if you don’t already have them).They’re only £11.
They would be ideal to crack the bolt off but iirc there isn't quite enough clearance to get the bolt out of the caliper without removing the top mount bolt. May be wrong as it was a few years ago I last did it.
Thanks both… The picture in my last post shows the pinch bolt is very slightly covered by the fork and top mounting bolt. As mentioned I can remove 3 pinch bolts when the caliper is mounted but I’ll have to remove the top mounting bolt to move the caliper a few mm then remove the pinch bolts….as long as the bottom mounting bolt will hold the caliper whilst removing the pb. Thought it would be a 10 minute job tbh…
