916 family advice needed

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Sev, Aug 21, 2013.

  1. Hi all,

A friend of mine is now seriously considering joining the family and becoming a Ducati owner :)

He's looking for a 916 family bike as he's always loved them, and is eyeing up the Foggarty and Bostrom replicas.

I can't help him at this point, so I'd like to ask all you Superbike owners, what the difference is between the two and what would you recommend?

He's seen differing prices and mileages, so I said I'd pitch it on here to get info from those who know.

    Thanks in advance :upyeah:

  2. If genuine factory built bikes then the Foggy is a 996 Desmoquattro and the Bostrom is a 998 Testastretta, so totally different engine.

The 998 is technically superior being a later model; more power, better reliability etc. but some prefer the older engines as they are more raw with more low-down grunt.

Graphics are a matter of personal choice.

  3. The Foggy rep is pretty rare. Only 200 were sold and were UK only. They are 916 SPS but are 996cc. If it's genuine, don't expect to find one for much less than 10k...if it's mint it'll be much more.
The Bostrom was a 998S with the paintjob and a few other trinkets. Again, they fetch good money but make sure it's a genuine one if paying the premium.
The older Quattro motors are more "characterful" as mentioned, the SPS motors are great....Raw and raucous. Do need looking after properly though. The plating on the cam followers is the main weakness.
The 998 motor is a peach, and in the "916" chassis is one of my favourite combos.
    All depends on budget....

  4. 1/ 916SP Very rare now on dvla website and great bikes
2/916 SPS again not many around stonking motors
3/ 996SPS more about to purchase later ones get marchesini wheels and ohlins front forks
4/ 916SPS Foggy Rep/SPSF/SPS Pista all rare special additions ie a sps with decal kit and tecnosel seat pad oh and kyalami frame - better off buying standard SPS and some carbon wheels, secondhand ohlins r&t forks, p34 calipers, stm slipper clutch and brembo radial mcs imho if your mate plans on riding it for that money imho

Bostrom and Bayliss nice bikes and not many around. Not as raw as earlier desmoquattro SP and SPS bikes so im told.

996R 998R nice bike very sought after but silly money like foggy reps.Strange as 916SP in much rarer now according to DVLA website.

  5. I've got a Foggy & I've had a 998S Bayliss which is very similar to a Bostrom....both brilliant bikes....he won't go wrong with either....both are getting rare & mint bikes fetch strong money!! I would suggest he looks at what's about to guage price/condition.
