996 Tacho Not Working

  1. Pin 12 is what I meant. Apologies. There isn't a pin 24!

  2. Looking like a short to earth then unfortunatley.

  3. Can you tell me which part of what I have done indicates that?

  4. According to Haynes wiring diagram,1999-2000 996 SPS, if this is correct? Ducati manual not much better. Pin 24 goes to earth, pin 12 goes to tacho. I take it you have a 996 bip? Whereas pin 24 goes to tacho. Therefore a suspect short to earth?

  5. This is the can of worms!!

I have 996 Biposto. Manufactured December 1999, First Registered April 2000

    However

The wiring is as per the Haynes Manual diagram for the 1999-2000 SPS - NOT the Biposto. PIN 12 on the ECU connector goes to the Tacho (Grey/Green wire). Pin 24 on the connector does not exist (this was my error earlier in the description - I will edit to show PIN12 for any future readers!)

    It has a 16M ECU

  6. Surely the way forward is to disconnect the Tacho from the bike loom and run some test leads for +/- (from the battery) and signal directly from the signal pin of the ECU.

  7. Morning

Id like to do something like this, but I'm not sure how to get a feed direct off the ECU while still being able to run the bike. The ECU plug doesn't have any way of piggy backing while plugged in.....or does it and I've missed something?

  8. Probe the connector from the reverse side. Some disassembly required. Or, probe by piercing the relevant wire.

  9. If you can't find anyone to lend you a defo 100% working tacho and/or ECU...why doesn't somone accept to receive your tachos and ecu and to test it on their own bike? I'd do this for you no problem, except I'm a decent distance away, across an import/export border. :(

  10. Pin 12 to pin 19 at 0.1 ohms doesn't sound correct. Still sounds like the output is being dragged down.

  11. Just for clarity, that was the green/grey connector on the 19 Pin connector above the battery, not pin 19 on the ECU

  12. Is this on the ECU plug or connector above battery?

  13. On the ECU Plug, the hole where pin 24 would be is empty.

  14. Picture of my ECU connector

  15. So just to recap, the green grey wire leaves pin 12 ECU to the tacho and is ok and no short to earth ?

  16. Correct

Green/Grey leaves from Pin 12, and has continuity to the connector at the back of the tacho

There is no continuity between the green/grey and earth

  17. Odd! As I said not all wiring diagrams are 100%. Strange no pin 24? If the bike is running ok ECU must be getting a signal from the crank position sensor. Bad connection on pin 12 ECU plug maybe?

  18. Full marks for trying Dallypro, and this will serve as a good thread for future readers with similar problems when (not if!) you get to the bottom of this.

  19. Its driving me round the bend!

I agree no pin 24 is strange for a Biposto the age of mine, but this does match up with the Haynes wiring diagram for a 1999-2000 SPS. Tacho signal is from Pin 12, not 24.

Bike is running a dream. Had a good summer on it......just without a tacho.

I am 100% convinced the next step is to get the ECU and Tacho(s) tested on a known working bike........so if anyone in South Wales or the South West or M4 corridor happens to have a 996 apart which uses a 16M tacho and sends the tacho signal from PIN 12 on the ECU - Get in contact!

Otherwise for now, ive just ordered a cheap oscilloscope to check the signal from the ECU. I have absolutely no idea how it works, but when it arrives and ive got my head around it - i will report back again!

  20. Think you are counting from the wrong end. In your picture bottom left is pin 1 and bottom right is 19
