Wash In Waterproofing Recommendations Please

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Zhed46, Nov 10, 2025.

  1. I want to proof a quilted textile jacket. It's not the usual motorbike cordura or cordura-like textile but more the sort of material fashion jackets are made from (see pic).

I've used Nikwax before but it was ages ago and I can't remember if it worked or not.

What's good, what's rubbish? Any Top Tips appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. Nikwax was my go to ‘wash in’ waterproofer as well. Found it was more a repellant than proofer. OK for showers but nothing heavy. Used it on fleeces and light rain used to bead on the fleece.

  3. I too use Nikwax.

You need to apply several times a year.

  7. I thought it might be but Google said Dover is cockney RS for “give over”

The jacket is a Bering Maximus btw.

  8. Very nice.

You could use ‘Nanny’ (goat) too.

  9. We use Nick wax in this house for my boys work oranges waterproofs.

I have used the waterproofer on my light quilted jacket from M&S it's shower proof but not waterproof
It works well on my karrimor weathertite jacket as that's already waterproof

  10. Moved thread :)

  11. Wash with the nikwax wash in then when the jacket is drying/damp spray with the nikwax proofer spray they do.
Always worked well when I was commuting

  12. Thanks for the replies everyone. I used the wash in Nikwax stuff and I’m quite impressed with the results - previously the fabric would immediately absorb water and “wet out”, but now it beads on the surface and runs off. It remains to be seen whether that’s still the case in a torrential downpour, but so far so good. :upyeah:
