Multistrada 1260 Ecu Issue

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Aprilsky, Nov 27, 2025.

  1. Hi everyone, I have a friend who owns a 2019 Multistrada 1260. Earlier this year he installed a few aftermarket components, including a race ECU (non-OEM). The bike has been running fine for daily work (around 30 km each way), but a few weeks ago it suddenly developed an issue. When attempting to start the bike, the starter motor engages and the fuel pump primes as normal, but the bike still wouldn’t start.

I connected my own OBDSTAR diagnostic tool to check for fault codes, but nothing came up, and there were no warning lights on the dash either. He later took the bike to a local workshop for further inspection, and after a few days they concluded that the ECU is faulty and needs to be replaced, quoting him £850 for a new unit.

I’m wondering if anyone here has experienced or heard of a similar issue with the Multistrada 1260, especially when using non-OEM or race ECUs. How did it turn out?

Any practical advice or troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Surely your friend wasn't daft enough not to keep the original ECU to swap back in when something like this happened.

  3. A new ECU for that model is £1500 which makes me sceptical. Unless, they’re quoting for a 2nd hand unit but even then one has to be careful as the part numbers on the ECU for that model have changed during its production life and the older variants can be picked up for around £250.

Another question raises its head which is why your friend didn’t just get the original ECU mapped? It’s a common practice. Why buy a ‘race’ ECU? Or does your friend actually mean he bought a piggy back unit such as those from JetPrime, Rapid Bike, Power Commander etc. ?

My senses are telling me your friend isn’t giving you the complete story.
