Commuting From Portland To London

  1. Thanks for your input everyone. I may purchase a cheapie Honda Forza 300 for the station and shopping runs, and keep the MS in the garage for now, or just until weather gets better. Cheers all.

  2. I used to commute from Surrey into central London from March to November. Originally I would park in a bay near Holborn but when the office moved to Soho I used the NCP to keep the bike out of view. Westminster charge for bike bays but it’s cheaper than NCP. I used a disc lock and have a tracker fitted on my Multistrada.

Glad I’m retired now and don’t have to do the trip any more but I still preferred it to the train. Come November the dark and wet leaves were enough to persuade me the train was worth enduring.

As others have said most of South London seems to be 20mph zones and fast food scooters everywhere.

  3. I am a hardened rider, quite a few years as a London dispatch rider and I live in London. I live in north London and worked in Chelsea for several years, had a parking spot in the building car park for me. But I thought it would be lovely to ride alongside the Thames to get to work…… how wrong was I….. I did it 3 times in about 10 years only. If you are riding a bike you have any affection for it’s a total nightmare the way other 2 wheelers behave. I came to the conclusion the only way it might work was to buy a heap of roadworthy junk that I would be quite happy to get damaged, nicked, whatever, and also would free me up mentally to ride accordingly!! Inner city roads are no longer any fun on 2 wheels, that’s what country roads are for .
