Hyper 821 Immobilizer Error

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by John Bower, Dec 4, 2025.

  1. Dear All,
recently when switching the ignition on. its coming up with error. Going into the error menu, it says immobilizer. By switching the ignition off and on approximately 5 times. It will eventually, come on without the error, allowing the bike to start.
Just to give some background. The bike suffered from the christmas tree problem 2 years ago. whereby the clocks were replaced, also new coil packs, and canbus filter added. It's been fine since.
I have noticed that when its warm / hot, the problem doesn't happen. probably coincidence? Any thoughts / help is much appreciated.

  2. On some bikes this can be caused by water blocking the signal from the key transponder to the immo antenna. Usually caused by a down pour or washing the bike.

  3. Appreciate your thoughts. however, its not been out in rain, I'm really careful when washing with water, staying clear of the controls.

  4. If I remember correctly, the immobiliser antenna is located around the key switch. The antenna is routed as shown below.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Hi Gandalf, That's great thank you. I may be able to do some testing on this. The other problem may be, I believe its also connected to the clocks. It's identifying the route cause.
    Cheers.....john.

  6. Try the simple things first.. does it do it on all keys? If not, could be the transponder in a particular key. Fit a new antenna. They're not that expensive and they do/can fail if the internal coil breaks down. After that, yes, it could be a dash problem, but that's a much more costly route and harder to diagnose.

  7. Thanks Nelly, yes it does it with both black keys ( I don't have a red key). Is the antenna part of the ignition barrel? If not where is it located? I was thinking of testing the resistance in the connector, do you know what it should read?
Does anyone have a link for a new antenna please.
    I appreciate your help.

  8. My error, sorry. The antenna on the HYM is part of the ignition lock itself, not a separate item like other models. Not such an easy check....
Another thought? Do you have a carbon key surround or such like fitted? They've been known to block the transponder signal, or at least reduce its strength.

  9. Hi guys,
No it doesn't have a cover on, just standard. That confirms what my local dealer said this morning. They thought it could be the Tiordial coil. When they looked it up it's a complete barrel approximately £270, approx 3hrs labour, north of £500 job:tired_face: Would i be correct in thinking if I bought and fitted the part, it would still need to be programmed?

    Thanks for your efforts guys......john.

  10. @nelly will confirm this, looking at the programming procedure it looks DIY providing you have the PIN code for your bike. The immobiliser system appears to be I2K-2. A new lockset will come with new transponder keys. Read the attached PDF.

  11. @chrisw, I don't have a pin code for this bike. I've just replaced the starter motor, I was considering taking the tank off and replacing the air filter and spark plugs. The bike has only covered 5680 miles, I'm making the assumption these will still be the originals, so coming up 12 years old. I have no paperwork that suggests these have been done. Is this something you would recommend? At the same time checkout the wiring to the barrel etc.

  12. If you're making an assumption about the plugs and air filter, when were the cam belts last changed? If you have no info/history, they're the priority to replace! They're a 5-years replacement period regardless of mileage.

  13. @Keith_P Sorry, I do have some history. The belts were changed when i bought it two years ago. but because of the low mileage its only had the standard services. The low mileage is due to low use between owners. This is the reason I did the coolant and brake fluid when I bought it. My OCD is telling me that the only items are air filter and Plugs. I guess, if I decide to get the tank off for immobilizer. I can check the condition of them and replace as necessary. The immobilizer is my biggest issue at the moment.:sob:
    Regards...... John.
