The Racesafe Marshalling Association, supports the BSB by providing track side marshals, pit lane and start line marshals and through a separate training programme, scrutineers. The Racesafe “Join us” link here, https://www.racesafe.org/, is now active. The one day duration training days for the 2026 season are on the first weekends in March, 1st is for Knockhill, 8th & 9th is at the MSV facility in Bedford and 15th is at East Fortune. To complete your training, you are required to attend 12 individual days of racing under the watchful eye of an experienced team leader. You don’t have to attend every round, some only do 2 or 3 and there is no time limit on how long it takes to complete your 12 days but I’ll not sugar coat it, the marshals are entirely self funded, except having access to a dedicated camping area (for tents, caravans, camper vans) with 240v power hook up, toilets and hot showers, you get a food voucher for every day you attend which can be used for breakfast or dinner and you get a weekend guest ticket for a family member or friend who can stay with you, if you have the space. It’s bloody hard, being track side for up to 10 hours each day, in all weathers (you must attend 2 days, 1 of which must be a race day) and it’s not always a bed of roses. Racing is a dangerous sport and you might have to respond to an incident involving serious injury or, as at Oulton Park this year, loss of life but that is what we are trained for and why we are there. The Marshalls are supported by professional paramedics but you might have to support a rider’s head whilst the paramedic provides aid. At some stage, you will most definitely be part of the team recovering an injured rider on a scoop (stretcher). After that gloom and doom, fatal and life changing injuries are rare, washing machine, tumbling injuries are the norm, that is if the rider doesn’t get straight up and stomp off in a huff. Being track side brings a whole new aspect to watching bike racing. At some tracks, you’ll be 15 feet away from bikes jostling for position travelling at ridiculous speeds. 2026 will be my 4th season and I’m as motivated for it as I was the first year. If you fancy it, feel free to PM me or if you are local to me, I’m always happy to pop down the pub for a chat Andy
MSV has a strict “no dogs” policy at all their tracks, including public camping within the curtilage of the track and as they own or lease 5 of the 8 tracks used by BSB (Knock Hill, Thruxton and Assen are the tracks they don’t), it’s a pretty academic question for the Marshal’s camp site. Andy
