Hi, I am going to buy a 42 tooth rear sprocket for my 1260 multistrada and have a question. Would it be “better” to buy a esjot or afam steel one or a Supersprox tri metal - I am looking for reliability/longevity. Any insights would be appreciated. Cheers
Steel will last longer than an aluminium alloy. Alloy ones are for weight saving - he laughs as it will make bugger all difference on a MultiStrada.
I don’t want alloy, must admit I have used renthal for decades but only off road. I was unsure of the construction of the Supersprox tri metal, looks like a steel ring is riveted onto an alloy carrier hence my comment re reliability. I went 14 tooth on the front standard on the rear to try a gearing change and liked it hence looking at a 42 tooth rear.
Don't think there's a reliability issue with supersprox. My r6 had a supersprox when i bought it, put a further 15k miles on the bike before i changed to a new chain and sprocket set prior selling. Rear sprocket looked virtually the same to me when comparing to the new supersprox. Not sure on total mileage from one of those sprockets or how it varies between different bikes that produce more torque and such. But definitely a quality item.
On my previous 1260 I had a JT sprocket carrier, the sprockets are cheaper 2nd time around (that didn't work out as I wrote her off). At the time I couldn't find a 42T though and wound up with a 40T and a 14T on the front. I believe that AFAM do a carrier version of a 42T 530 sprocket but hard to find, or were at the time. As far as I understand the JT, AFAM and Renthal carriers share the same pattern/design.
Thanks for the info it’s very useful. I can find a 42 tooth renthal for about £35 quid less than an all steel esjot/afam one which sound to me at least to be more reliable as single piece. I will have another look to see what’s what on the carrier front. Cheers
It was helped by finding a used but new (i.e. bought but never installed) carrier for £50 on eBay. Snapped up in advance of a chain a sprocket replacement. In late 2024 I bought another 1260, a Pikes Peak this time. Dealer had fitted a new OEM chain and sprockets, changed the chain for a DID Gold one and swapped out the front for a 14T. When those come up for replacement will be fitting another carrier and, if I can find one, the AFAM 42T steel sprocket along with a 15T front.
