Have a friend who wants to sell his 998r his father left him, he had no real interest in it and has offered it to me first knowing I like Ducati before going to dealers. How much would a 998r with 18k, good but not perfect condition (some chips, mild, maybe polish out scratching) be with these days. Can't find much out there on consistency of pricing? Even if it's too help him get the right money for it (I'm really after a 1098r so don't know if I'm interested) Thank you in advance
I think the high end is optimistic. How long has the 998R at the Bike Specialists been for sale ? Andy
Prices are all over at the moment. The £30k days are done for a while imo. A quick google and there's a massive spread. One for just under £13k with 24k miles and at the other end the Sheffield bike at £30k. Advertised prices are high due to people wanting their investment back, what they paid, not what the market is dictating at the moment. 18k miles won't attract "collectors" so I'd sit and have a chat about a "realistic" price that your both happy with..
Prices down on this side of the pond as well. The post-covid exuberance well and truly over now. First year 916's with a V in the vin now barely fetch $US10K.
Having recently sold a 29k mile 998r with a massive spares package at not too far away from my asking price I'd say somewhere between £15k to £18k for a bike with no spares, but, very dependent on condition, recent maintenance etc. To ask £30k the bike needs to be very, very low mileage and look like its never been ridden, the buyers of those that sort of thing are rare. There are a few buyers out there who want a 998r to ride and not have as a garage ornament, they are prepared to pay a sensible price for a bike on its own. Buying a very low mileage bike makes no financial sense if you want to ride it IMHO. You pay a premium that evaporates as the miles go up. I had interest from 3 other interested private potential buyers. My preference was to sell the whole package in one deal, so it went to a private buyer in one deal last year. Made the break clean after over 20 years ownership. The massive parts package gave the owner some options and security with some now probably unobtainable stuff. Some of which was new OEM panels in OEM packaging.
The long and short of it is that when there's only a few available in the marketplace, that dictates the high pricing in my opinion and if you want ownership then get your money out.
Well going to see it next week and see if I can own an tick the 916 era bike of my owed list. Thank you for your inputs people and I'll keep you updated on this one.
It is probably worth looking up what the auction sale prices have been. There have been a few 996R for sale on Collecting Cars, generally rather Clean and some with recent refresh too. They went around the 20-ish mark. Many of those prices were in lockdown madness with bored people and cash on the hip from saving on commute. I think that the prices have calmed down with sellers trying to shoot for those numbers still, but buyers being scarcer, especially since the credit crunch. 998R is slightly different with more carbon (seat unit) and a 999cc engine, last of the R line on the 916/998 shape, etc. So, probably a slight premium over the 996R but account for change in market conditions too and you are probably around that number.
Hello guys, I am just reopening this tread. I am based here in Spain and am currently looking to acquire a 998r from France. I just wanted to see if anybody here would be up to date on 998R pricing. Most ads are above 45keuros lately, for mileage around 10,000km. Where do you think the pricing of a very good condition, 10,000km , all invoices available from Ducati shop should be ? https://www.leboncoin.fr/ad/motos/3105884095 Thank you for your lights Edo
I think that a UK forum is the wrong place to ask for continental prices. There was a time when the prices in the UK were higher than in the rest of Europe. This was branded as rip-off britain and quite a few bikes were imported as a result. Time have changed a lot since. I would say that the prices of anything fancy - cars or bikes- is probably 20-30% lower in the UK at the moment. The fact that the GBP has plummeted after Brexit and the UK having been a struggling economy with one crisis after another in the past decade and a half (financial / brexit / covid / cost of living / current tax levy ) probably have a lot to do with it. I don't think that a 998R over £30k (€35k) will shift in the current UK market. In 2024, my dad sold his 996 Carrera 4s in France for about €40k (it was a tip with 120k km). In the UK you find those for about £25k (under €30k). We went from rip-off britain to bargain basement. And yet, we can't afford to stock up on that exotica.
Hello Desmophil, Thank you for the honest and detailed answer. I noted UK had the most ads for 998r online over the past 2-3 years. Very difficult here in Europe to find actual sales price and the few ads we see here are all over the place from 45 to 59k€ !! I will keep looking a bit more. I was in the UK from 2018-2022 and had an Hypermotard 1100s 2009. Was living at Dalston and often going to the Bike Sheds on weekends. I wish we had this here in Barcelona. Edouard
I live in France, and the market has cooled somewhat, however the 916, 996, 998 models still fetch a real premium. You would be much better finding a UK bike and then importing it...even with hassle, admin and import tax you will get a much better deal. Good luck.
Always comes down to condition, milage, history, time and place, but I'd argue the opposite that the 996R is seen as the more desirable and, apples to apples, is likely to command a premium over the 998R due to being more scarce, pioneering the testa engine & stronger ties to race success.
I have been stalking an ex-race 996RS for two years now, but I am not winning the price battle, even in these difficult times.
