Shame he did alright for a (very fit) amateur. Certainly didn’t embarrass himself. I’m not sure how it ever entered his head that he could competently perform both roles at the same time though. Sounds like he got his arse slapped by HRC eventually.

If you haven’t seen it, I recommend that (especially ageing) road cycling fans get hold of a copy of the short documentary film “Fairless”. I found it inspirational and I have always liked the Australian “no frills” approach to cinematography anyway. I saw it by chance on a long-haul flight a decade ago and thought it might become a bit of an “on any Sunday” type icon, but it seems to have been forgotten. Reviving it here! Trailer:

I was initially surprised as last season was potentially an opportunity to maximise his earnings at the tail end of his career. However, as someone who has just put his papers in because I am similarly tired of the routine I currently have, I can fully understand his decision, and his is a much more demanding world than mine. There was an article with him a couple of weeks ago on that domestique site (which is superb btw and every motorbike www should hang their heads in shame by comparison) basically saying exactly what’s just come out so although I was surprised this morning when I saw your post it makes perfect sense now.
As I’ve mentioned previously in the thread his Giro win is without doubt in my top sporting moments of 2025. I can still hear Rob Hatch’s voice “Wout Van Aert is waiting for him on the Finestre”. The rest as they say is history.

Tour of Oz starts this week (womens has started already) although not much coverage due to time diff and the fucking Aussie open tennis. I even saw the Alulu tour on my tv schedule the week after. Here we go.
Ineos Grenadiers and Sam Watson win the opening stage/prologue of the year by half a second from Ethan Vernon. Jayco team looking strong and would imagine remain favourites.
