That sounds like blackthorn, even after the thorn is removed the poison gets left behind. They're spiteful bloody shrubs but make great stockproof hedges.
Yes it was blackthorn. Very rare I react to it - or hawthorn. I assumed I was more or less imune as I get stobbed by it all the time. Usually it's just irritating until the thorn is removed. This one was weird. Puncture wound burns like severe nettle rash and the knee joint is painful and seized. Actually they're not toxic but they can host a lot of bacteria. Place I'm working is a filthy dump so that may account for it. They gave me a tetanus and a course of antibiotics.
