Who knows, I suppose it's possible the alternator was taken out by a faulty rectifier or vice-versa? My Guzzi was a simple, age-related failure, it's 47 years old - rectifier still working though...
899 runs the later type reg/rec, which is mosfet as are most of the bikes now. No issues with lead acid batteries

Most definitely, and a common reason for alternator failure on older models due to poor choice of wire and block connector quality but same logic applies to a Panigale. It's very unlikely to be a wrong choice of battery issue.
