950 Desert X Sat Nav

Discussion in 'Desert X' started by Light Buzzyear, Feb 21, 2026 at 8:50 AM.

  1. Looking to add a Sat Nav Zumo XT2 (or 3 out soon) to the DX. Ducati sell their own version of the Zumo XT2, it's actually the same unit, but with the word Ducati on for an additional £150 or so! Looking at the connection of the device (Ducati), it does look like there's a wire already installed on the DX and the connection is fairly simple operation by removing the screen, adding the Ducati Sat Nav bracket, plugging in and away you go. It looks like the Ducati version has a different electrical connection wire to the Zumo one when you look at the what's in the box video's for the Zumo version.

Has anyone managed to connect a standard Zumo XT2 in the Ducati version way? It appears to be a bit of a choice as to ease of connection or pay more and wire in a different way? I'm not very technical btw.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I did do a search but didn't come up with anything. Cheers

  2. I’m not familiar with the Desert X but have the Garmin XT2 fitted to my V4 Pikes Peak. The Ducati pre wired sat nav loom has a blanking plug that has a short length of wire covered in heat shrink. I stripped back the heat shrink and soldered the Zumo wiring to it. Did the same on my first gen 1200 Multistrada which had the same style of pre wiring. I have a spare somewhere so will try and post a picture. Andy

  3. If your Desert X is the same as my Pikes Peak, this is what you are looking for (L) and what I did for the XT2 (R). Andy

  4. Thanks Andy, even to me that looks pretty straight forward :upyeah::)

  5. @Light Buzzyear, a word of caution, you will need a digital volt meter to make sure the bike’s +ve and -ve match the Garmin’s. My first attempt on my 1200 Multistrada failed miserably :joy: Andy

  6. It’s a much easier job on the Desert X than any of the Multis.

  7. Just looked at the new Garmin Zumo XT3, https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/1904331/ and ………. oh dear ! Big difference is the full integration of the sat nav with the Garmin Tread app which, given my experience of the app paired to the XT2, has put me off changing. Also not sure I want a dedicated sat nav to show me lean angles, lap times and off the line drag start data  If you regularly ride with a group, who also have the Tread app, being able to see where the other riders are, could be useful but my preference would be the Sena app for keeping in contact when you are out of line of sight. 8. I have wired an XT2 into my DDX using the accessory plug behind the screen. You need to put a JWPF connector onto your XT2 power cable. How to do this is to be found on t’internet but if you need help from me please shout.

  9. Btw … before you plump for the XT, have a good think about the kind of riding you are going to do. I also have a Montana which is a better choice for more adventurous and / or off-road trips (TET, Africa, Nepal, China … that kind of thing). If your riding tends more towards road & Western civilisation then the XT is great :)

  10. Cheers for all the replies.

I currently use the Calimoto App which I think is brilliant and very easy to route plan etc. Never had an issue with it. The main reason I'm considering changing is that I saw a review on internet saying that firstly, in mountainous regions when your phone signal crashes you're basically screwed until it returns unless you have downloaded off line maps, which I have done but it does take a fair amount of space up. Secondly, the guy suggested if you should get thrown from the bike for any reason and you can't get to it, your phone is still on the bike. Better under those circumstances to have phone in your pocket. I'll add a third too, if not going off road its still great but it doesn't recognise off road tracks as yet, and even if it did I'm not sure I'd want my I phone subjected to that amount of vibration, dust etc.
Calimoto is brilliant but with limitations.

Re the XT2. If I had that unit I wouldn't change to the XT3. Yes it processes much quicker but I agree about the other lean angle and g force stuff, it's pretty much irrelevant to me. But, as I haven't got one I would get the 3 cos why wouldn't you as they tend to make things better not worse - price dependent of course.

I've looked at quite a few alternatives, some look pretty decent too but some of those also require a mobile phone signal. Never heard of the Montana I have to say, so I'll have a search and see what it offers. To be honest, I haven't done any off road stuff as yet, other on my grass a bit . There's also a pretty decent Chinese near me but that's the closest I'm getting to that particular part of the globe. I am Considering the Sweet Lamb as an introduction to that side of riding but that's expensive.

  11. Garmin are imo taking the pish with the lean angle perf stats option for the XT3 as they want £9.99 per month as a subscription for this add on .
