Battery Leads.

  1. Hi all, just clipping the M900 back together after a big service and the last thing I looked at was the battery leads. I've always thought they were inadequate and I replaced the earth lead a while ago and ran it all the way to the engine/frame connector. The short positive lead and probably the lead to the starter need beefing up. I've looked at the kits but I'm reluctant to buy for about 90 quid something I can make myself in half an hour. So what opinions are there on cable size and spec?

    Cheers Ian

  2. Stuart (Exige) supplies good quality battery cables. You’ll need to search on the other channel to make contact.

I think the specs are there so you can also build your own to similar specs if you choose to. I made my own a long time ago and have had no issues with them.

  6. Yes, you can make perfectly reasonable leads yourself, but if you feel you are capable of making them yourself then you will surely be able to source and obtain all the parts also? EBay has everything you need - the cable and the eyelets, soldered and/or crimped.

  8. I have made battery cables with welding cable, much cheaper than ready made “battery” cable, more flexible and available in orange and black (from my local supplier)

  9. Thanks for the responses, I was wondering if there is a recommendation for the size and spec for the cable?

  10. I am not a motorcycle “expert” I would use 35mm on a car with a large or diesel engine, I would expect 16mm to be plenty on a bike

  11. I’d go for 25–35 mm² cables for the main positive and earth, and make sure the starter lead is short, thick, and well-secured to avoid heat or rubbing.

  12. You can buy the materials and crimp tool for less than kits online.
I use 16mm2 welding cable, suitable for high amps and it's flexible.
Have kitted out 3 bikes so far

The 16mm cable is thicker than stock but still routes nicely, I did make a new wire clamp to hold it to the engine case as below

Here are the ones I made for my 916 compared to stock

  13. One question. The kits you buy (I have one of Stuart's Exact kits on my 1098) augment and double up on the existing cables. I don't know what size they are but they don't look like 35mm. Is it better to piggyback a second set of cables or replace entirely with heavier gauge?

  14. Exact start cables are 8.5mm in diameter.
