The Dvla Scrapped My Car

  1. After all my moaning this is now resolved. I have just managed to re-tax the car! DVLA emailed me 20 mins before I was about to depart on a 3.5 round trip to pick up a temporary car so that was good timing.

If anyone is interested here is the conclusion. They mention it was not their fault many times!

Thank you for your response to our e-mail about incorrect information shown on our records for your vehicle XXXXXXX

Upon further investigation, it appears we were notified by an Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF) that they had issued a certificate of destruction (COD) for the vehicle on the 4 March 2026. In line with current procedures, the vehicle record was closed down. No further reminders would have been sent to the keeper once the record was closed.

DVLA are obliged to take every application of COD as genuine in order to avoid delaying applications going through and prolonging the registered keeper’s liability for a vehicle they no longer keep.

From the information you provided it was evident that this notification was submitted in error. Unfortunately, as we have no control when these notifications are submitted electronically, we were unaware that our records were incorrect until you contacted us.

Following investigations I can confirm that the COD has been removed from our records.

The vehicle must be taxed immediately, as your current tax has ended in 4 March 2026. I do not deal with taxing the vehicle.

You can use the reference number on your vehicle registration certificate (V5C) and tax your vehicle online at www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax or by phoning 0300 123 4321.

Alternatively, you can tax at a Post Office® that deals with vehicle tax. You will need your V5C, a valid certificate of insurance or cover note (downloaded copies are acceptable, photocopies are not) valid on the date the vehicle tax comes into force, proof of a valid MOT (electronic copies are acceptable) or GVT certificate (if your vehicle needs one) and your payment (if applicable).

The amendments to the record can take up to 24 hours to show on our website.

If you wish to tax the vehicle online, please allow 24 hours for your vehicle details to update.

I am sorry for the inconvenience this matter has caused but the DVLA is not at fault as we have only acted upon information that has been supplied to us electronically by the ATF.

  3. No mention of taking the ATF who perpetrated the error being taken to task. Many distant moons ago when I was of employment age, the transmission of critical data in my sphere, required 2 people, one to enter the data and one to verify the data had been entered correctly. Pleased it’s been resolved. Andy

  4. Realised they did me out of months tax as well!

  5. If you haven't cashed the cheque I would ask them to reinstate it as that is also their error and you shouldn't be out of pocket for it.

  6. I was wondering whether that would be the case, since the refund of partial months is "impossible" according to DVLA. I wouldn't be pleased if they -through the inadequacy of their system- charged me an additional £35!

Glad you got it resolved prior to car hire fees though.

  7. Can you refund me on the "Quaint rustic Volvo Glamping Experience #dog taxi" Airbnb booking I just made with you please?
