On both sides of the mid section there is a short length of tube that houses a Rawlnut (Well nut) and the Allen head bolt secures into it through a brass type collar; it is the main fixing for the mid section. LHS is absolutely no problem. On the RHS I find that when the mid section is sitting comfortably the bolt does not reach the Well nut unless I push the fairing section in to such a degree that it feels wrong. I tried a longer bolt which was fine but unless it is really tight it will not allow the Well nut to expand and grip inside the tube. The result is that the Well nut just pulls out. The whole fixing feels wrong to me but I can't seem to workout what might be preventing the fairing section from locating correctly. My first thought was perhaps the battery was forcing the section away but that seems OK. Has anyone else with an ST2;3;4 had this experience?
your best bet is to do a search Graham, not on here, on Google. First of all, precisely write out in question form including ST2 Ducati, and then précis it down to as few words as possible but still asking that specific question about the mid fairing, then, patiently go through all the options (this forum will come up) Ducati.MS will come up, Reddit probably and several other others but just work your way through them, I know it's come up on this forum many times, because it is a daft, compromised design. This is exactly what I would do if you asked me to find the information so I'm letting you do it instead of me this time
Hi Chris, I have done some preliminary searching and agree that I can probably find a solution but because you have already intimated that it is a compromised design I think I will endeavour to add an additional spacer and obtain a longer bolt so as to enable the Well nut to get crushed without overly distorting the fairing section.
Nearly all fairings "walk around "to some degree, making it harder to align the fixings sometimes and it's also possible that the well nut is a bit tired. Several times I've had to juggle the length of the screw because, as you say, getting it to engage that first thread (and not cross thread) is the Key to success. Even the 1098 is not a straightforward affair, but I do remember that people struggle the most with yours
