748 High Tickover When Warm

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by andy1303, Apr 9, 2026.

  1. Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of their 748/916 etc having a normal raised tickover at startup (approx. 2k), then it dropping to the normal tickover (about 1k), and then when the bike warms up it rising to 2-3k again?
Smells like an intake air leak to me but I wondered if anyone has any other experience before I have to strip the bike?
    Thanks

  2. Thanks - I've never used AI before.

  3. So if AI told you to strip your engine as its has a failed head gasket! Would you do it......?
I would start with the basics. Throttle cable and cold start button adjustment. Then set up and balance the throttle bodies and adjust the CO2. Then, if that doesn't sort it! Check that the fuel pressure is correct and not too high, just in case there is an issue with the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel return pipe being restricted or breaking up internally.

  5. I would have thought an air leak would cause a weaker mixture? A rich mixture would cause higher revving. Unless their is a vacuum sensor I don't know of? Could be temperature sensor telling the ECU that the engine is still cold? As mentioned above, start with basics, settings etc. Condition of spark plugs a good clue.

  6. Make sure you religiously follow the Sat Nav and ignore all the road signs.
As for AI, it is just a tool that is becoming better as time goes on. It is really good at researching information from various sources. The caveat is you need to check the information it gives to confirm the conclusions. It is excellent at creating complex Excel formulas and macros. I used it when working on calculating the checksum for Ducati dash odometer readings.

  7. So I haven't had the bike long and haven't been able to ride it due to a lack of MOT. I've been going over it making sure it's roadworthy and was worried I'd done something to cause the issue, but without the MOT I can't test ride it. I took it for the MOT this morning and it was doing the high idle, but I also noticed there was no free play in the throttle. Turns out as the bike was warming up it was tightening the throttle cable and raising the idle.
    Thanks for your suggestions gents.

  8. So issue 3. Nice and cheap. MOT passed?

  9. Oh yes, MOT passed, thanks for asking. Nearly had a heart attack when I taxed it. Now I can get out on it and enjoy it.
