“2003 1000DS, the clutch suddenly became stiff and feels like it’s binding. I noticed that in neutral, when I pull the lever, the pressure plate stops immediately (normally, if you pull the clutch in neutral, the pressure plate separates from the pack and keeps spinning on its own for a few seconds). This makes me think it could be the pressure plate bearing. I removed the pressure plate, but the bearing spins freely and doesn’t seem to have any play. Clutch basket and plate pack have about 3000 km on them. With the engine off, there’s no issue. Master cylinder at the lever and the slave cylinder down below feel good with no binding with engine off...
Sounds like pushrod partially snagging internally. There a needle roller bearing that can break up and it's possible for pushrod to break in the middle in worst case scenario.
part 29, i've ordered a replacement, thinking about sticking a m6 rod alll the way through and pull the bearing in with a socket on the rod
The new needle roller (part 29) that engages with the clutch pushrod should be easy to slide along the bore of the (part 2 assembly) shaft. Could you add a picture of the pushrod that you removed/have you got all of the destroyed needle roller "needles" and the cage out? It's possible that the housing bore of the (part 2) assy has been damaged or enlarged if it's been run with a broken up bearing for some time.
the rod is toast.... i did get all the needles out. The housing looks fine, considering it took me 2 hours to get that stupid broken bearing out, it's say ok, the inside isnt damaged or anything...
I haven't been able to find the official notes on needle roller replacement, but I don't remember having a problem. They vary slightly from model to model. Hopefully somebody else can find The correct notes for the early multiStrada rather than me guess.
i was thinking about pulling the bearing in with a long threaded rod a coupl of washers, nuts, and a socket... only issue is, how deep should the bearing go exactly?
As said, rather than me guess, you need to find access to the official works job description, or someone who's replaced one more recently - there is a shoulder or internal circlip that stops you going too far.
If you haven’t asked already maybe try this forum as there are more of the 1000DS owners there https://www.multistrada.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
What do you mean by official works job description? Is this something that i can find in the workshop manual? I can't seem to find it there.
If the bearing has a steel outer race, which I think it does, then I would do as you suggest, threaded bar and pull it into place from the other side, you'll feel when it hits the shoulder.
Issue is, when i removed it, it was like 1mm away from the shoulder. I dont know if it moved when it broke, or if it's meant to be this way, also considering tjat if there is no clearance between the bearing and shoulder, how would one get something behind it to remove it?
A shoulder is machined for the bearing to butt up to, I've never known a bearing to 'sit off' the shoulder by design.
my pushrod also doesn't have this pin, i ordered a OEM pushrod from ducati for my 2003 year. but this one is different, likely for newer models. that pin should slot into the slave cylinder correct? there should be a notch? mine doesn't have it
