V4 Pikes Peak: Rare But Annoying Glitches - Advice Needed

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by richtea999, May 10, 2026.

  1. I've had my 2022 26k miles Pikes Peak for 3-4 months now, and I have noticed 3 glitches on my particular bike.
Any advice on them would be welcome. The bike is still under warranty until October, but they're impossible to reproduce on demand, so I'm a little stuck on what to say to the dealer.

    1. The engine dies on a down gear change roughly once every few hundred miles. It's always on a gear change with low revs and dropping, and it easily restarts.
Is it due to me using a mixture quickshifter up, but manual shifts down (a habit from riding older BMWs with only upshifters)?

    2. Quickshifter doesn't work / hesitates badly - tends to be low 3-5,000 revs never higher. There's about a half-second power cut, and then OOOF it goes into gear and off we go with a mighty jerk. Again, only once few few hundred miles, only lowish revs, and going only up the gears. The gear change was clean, not a fluffed one.

    3. Fails to take off from a standstill, almost as though the hillstart/something is fighting the clutch, even though that's not enabled. The clutch feels like it's stuck/juddering. More revs and slipping the clutch doesn't solve it. Very weird, and has only happened 2/3 times - so once per thousand miles. Pulling the clutch in/re-selecting first a couple of times recovers it, but it's potentially dangerous since the vehicle behind is expecting me to move off. Maybe first gear wasn't correctly engaged when I tried to set off, but that's not what the gear display says.

Apart from these, the clutch and quickshifter work flawlessly the rest of the time, and I've done 3,000+ miles on it, and at 6k+ high revs it never misbehaves (thank god).

    Thoughts please!

  2. My QS failed and was replaced under warranty, they aren't very robust. When 2 up I often use clutch for downshifts, you should be able to use both ways. Never have any issues pulling away, hill hold can be a bit too holdy, rode a new V4s as part of the Ducati roadshow, that seemed to release much easier so perhaps software, but if you don't it enabled then a bit strange.
I think a dealer visit is probably best.

  3. Can’t comment on points 2&3 but point 1;

I had exactly this on my Monster. It would just die when changing down, typically approaching a junction or roundabout.
I solved it by only using fuel from decent brands, such as Shell, BP or Repsol. If I used cheaper fuel it did it. I am 100% sure of this. I’ve experimented enough times.

Of course it may not be your problem but it’s worth a try.

I have to say though on my Pikes Peak I’ve used various filling stations and had no problem of that type. My problem is the awful running at low speed but my suspicion is, it’s the latest emission controls causing it.

As stated above, I haven’t had problems 2 or 3.

  4. Point 2: I have the same experience. I changed the standard QS to a Translogic and the fault remains. I'm not sure if it's operator error or, what I'm now thinking, an ECU issue.

Gears 5 & 6 are changed by the same selector, as opposed to the other two that cover 1 & 3 and 2 & 4. I don't know enough about gearboxes to say if it contributes, but the shift between 5 & 6 always feels 'long'.

So far, it hasn't caused me much of an issue, apart from looking like a bit of a tool every now and again. I don't really need any help in that department.

  5. Turn the QS off and see if your problems are still present.

  6. I appreciate that the handbook states the QS is designed to work above 2250rpm but IME, the bike needs more revs than that, I don't use it below 4000-4500rpm and do not have your experience. I also never use the QS from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. Andy

  7. I have found that as my tyres wear down, the quick shifter can loose some of its smoothness . By recalibrating in the settings menu brings it back to near perfect. Also a too slack chain will not help.

  8. I had the exact same issue as 1 on an old monster I has in the US, if I used shit fuel, it died heading into or at lights here and there. With decent fuel, the issue went away.

Not much help to the op, mind

  9. These bikes don't like regular unleaded petrol. I run all my vehicles on super, and the difference is noticeable. The one time I got caught out on the RS and had to use regular unleaded, it ran like a dog until I'd got rid of the cheap stuff and ran a couple of tanks of super through.

  10. I've not seen a menu setting for quickshifter calibration. Where is it?

  11. The calibration is for wheel/trye, which effects the quick shifter operating smoothly
